Notorious at Apex is $5 for 6ozs. Which is also ridiculous compared to other places.

APEX tapped theirs last night, not announced or on the menu. Somebody suggested I check it out today, saying it was low key and would likely last, but was gone by the time I got there at 2-ish. Ordered pFriem Triple IPA and Melvin Lambda instead.

According to Untappd it was tapped on the 26th. Looks like they were putting it on and off like they did last year.

After this and previous APEX stories, now I wonder if it's actually gone or if I just didn't have the right secret handshake. That's gonna stick with me now every time I visit the city.

Any chance it might still be around next weekend?

If you mean at the Apex, anything is possible, but the likelihood is not high (that would mean it had been on for roughly two weeks, which is pretty hard to imagine or fathom).

New School listed the places in Portland that were getting a keg, and most of the places on the list have already tapped it. Others can weigh in on this if I'm mistaken, but to the best of my knowledge, the only place in PDX that has not yet tapped their keg is Roscoe's. I don't know for sure about places like Side Street or Interurban, but based on the New School article, it sounds like the plan was to tap their keg before the end of the month (which means it would be gone by now). As for Rogue/Green Dragon, I have no idea if they've tapped their keg yet (it's possible they're waiting for some "event" to tap it).

Generally, most places only get a sixtel of younger, so there's not a whole lot to go around anyway. Given the demand, unless a bar does a silent tap release (like Belmont and Beermongers did this year), the beer sells out within a few hours (or less). Good luck!

You're right, but I had to see for myself. I don't know if that's what actually happened (I don't care enough to watch for more evidence either way), but the seed of doubt was planted based on past stories. Lots of other places to visit instead.

I've said it time and time again, but I will continue to do so every time it comes up. I have no idea why anyone would continue to support a business that pulls these kinds of shenanigans. Regardless of what beer they may have available. And it's not even like this is the only knock on this place. Boggles my mind.

I don't have a good answer for you. You know my feelings about the place, but the fact is, every once in a while I still go over there, as sometimes they'll have on some great beer that I really want to try that I seem to be unable to find any place else.

But it happens less and less all the time. Their extremely aggressive pricing, coupled with their continued insistence on taking cash only, has become pretty much the final straw for me. I don't really know any of the bartenders over there any more, and increasingly, the folks there seem to have gotten extremely defensive about charging customers for a small sample before they commit to a full glass. I spend a lot of time at Growler Guys, where they're happy to give you three or four free samples of anything on tap (even expensive, limited, barrel aged items), without blinking an eye. So I'm always taken aback when the Apex bartenders want to charge me a buck for the same sample, and how nasty they get when you tell them you forgot about the house policy, and don't need a sample glass after all.

Yeah, we've had this same conversation a couple of times in previous threads so I hate to beat a dead horse. But my opinion is that there are just so so many fantastic places to get world class beer in this region. And the vast majority of those places are a great experience -- great atmosphere, service, etc. Apex seems to be the only spot in town that doesn't give a shit about their customers. I think I can honestly say that there is no beer that they could have available that would lead me to support their business practices.

I'll be in PDX next weekend, and while I've been there a few times, never really spent time in the City, mostly passing through. Staying right by Apex, and had no idea about the negative opinions of the place, always thought it was a go-to spot in PDX. Reading this stuff was valuable. While I'm sure I'll pop in, I F'n hate beer places that won't provide tasters, or charge for them, that's a deal breaker for me.

    Looking forward to next weekend!

I've been to Apex at least fifty times and never had a problem. There's an ATM so spending cash doesn't bother me. I don't ask for tasters and if I'm at a spot that I'm not familiar with beer wise I'll pay for the smallest amount ounce wise and go from there. Cellarmaker does 5 oz. tastes for $2.50 and that's what I buy when deciding what beer to fill my growler with or what pint to drink. All of their beer prices are certainly cheaper than SF. They also take very good care of their pinball machines. Ran into the great Vic Drakulich there one time and was lucky enough to share a pint with him. I love that spot. I just checked their menu, most of their beers are $5 for 12 oz. or 16 oz. I believe that's reasonable considering the beers. Close to Toronado prices in SF. I just realized the two spots I love the most in Portland are the most hated by locals. Surprise, surprise.

Can confirm APEX blew their PtY keg.

Also, I love APEX. People are entitled to their opinions, but I've only had positive experiences here.

Lastly, may I suggest the creation of a "Bash APEX" thread? Since it seems like every-other PDX-related thread ends up derailing into bash APEX territory, maybe it would be best contained in one place. Hell, pin it to the top of the forum.

Cellarmaker will also allow you taste as many beers as you want without charge or attitude.
