Ehhhh GNB isn't hated by locals by any means.

I don't think Apex's draft pricing is out of line, but charging for tasters is unique to Apex, as far as I know. It's one thing not to pour tasters/to limit them to 1 per drink when it's busy, or even not to pour tasters of the beers that they have small kegs of, but to charge someone for a sip when none of those conditions are met is weird to me and unique in an undesirable way.

Next time you go there, take a close look at the entire tap list, including the prices. For many of the beers on the list, I think the pricing is spot on (definitely not out of line). But then you see things like regular speedway, priced at $5 for a 6 ounce pour. Or Boneyard notorious, also priced at $5 for a 6 ounce pour. Or PtE, priced at $8 for a pint. If their prices were high across the board, then you could kind of understand what's going on. However, the disparity in beer pricing at Apex is just weird, and is something I've never been able to figure out. Again, it's almost like they get a kick out of screwing with you. Course that's just my opinion.

And in case you haven't noticed by now, ElijahSF has a bit of a penchant for exaggeration. In the case of GN, if you don't agree with him that it's one of the greatest breweries in the Western Hemisphere, and is clearly the best brewery in the PNW, then that must mean that you hate the place. There is no middle ground.

Folks from California typically have vastly different preferences than folks from Oregon/Washington. Obviously just my experience. Also, with regard to pricing comparisons it would probably make more sense to compare pricing regionally. I'm not sure what is accomplished by comparing prices in Portland to those in SF.

Personally, I take more into account than just my own personal experiences when choosing which businesses to support. If I know that a business is doing things that I have a major issue with then I don't support them. Doesn't matter if any of these issues have happened to me personally. I'm sure there are plenty of folks that simply don't have an issue with some of their more questionable business practices .... and that is totally fine. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I will continue to bash businesses that do shitty things whenever the opportunity arises, regardless of whether or not there is a dedicated thread. I believe many visitors to the area would find this information useful when deciding which places to check out while in town. I know that I would.

You're using examples of a Triple IPA and Pliny to bash Apex about their prices. Be glad they even get PTE on a regular basis. Of course I've seen people on here say the "shit show" of PTY needs to go so they must not care.

I used those examples because off the top of my head, they were the only ones I could think of. I haven't been to Apex in several months (as you can probably tell, I'm not their biggest fan), and those were the only specific examples I could recall.

Your comment about Apex and PtE shows how little you know about the Portland beer scene. The only place that gets elder on a regular basis these days is the Horse Brass. Every place else, including the Apex, puts it on periodically. In the past 6 months, other places I've seen with elder include Roscoe's, the Upper Lip, Belmont Station, Saraveza, the Woodsman Tavern, Tin Bucket, Beermongers and the Green Dragon. County Cork used to always have it on tap, and even listed it as one of their regular tap handles, but I believe that's a thing of the past. The only thing unique to Apex about PtE is their pricing. There's is still the highest price in town. However, if you buy it back East at Monks, Teresa's Next Door or the P.O.P.E, the price will likely be higher there. So I guess that means it really isn't all that expensive after all, no?

Do you realize how lucky people in Portland are to even have it available on a regular basis? People in the rest of the country read you complaining about the price of PTE at Apex yet they'll never see it in their area.

County Cork Public House in North Portland has Pliny the Elder on about every other month.

You're right ElijahSF, we have no business complaining about the price of PtE, no matter how high the price. If Apex starts selling it for $20 a pint tomorrow, I'm just going to genuflect, rattle my rosary beads and offer up a prayer to the almighty, and thank him for the fabulous goodness that can only be equated with a $20 pint of PtE.

Caveat one: The comment above was meant to be a satirical retort. I would not actually offer up thanks to the almighty over the chance to buy a $20 pint of PtE at the Apex.

Caveat two: I'm Catholic. Consequently, it's perfectly OK for me to make jokes about rattling my rosary beads.

    Cheers!

Good lord you are thin-skinned when it comes to any kind of pushback against Great Notion.

    "Hated by locals." What nonsense.

    I genuflect before you, John.

Throughout our long internet relationship, through our infrequent, but true, real-life, personal interactions, I have found you to be a smart, funny, creative individual, who does not shy away from saying what you think.

That last sentence was the most perfectly funny thing I've ever encountered on BA.

    No shit.

    I'm a very tough crowd.

There are reasons I keep hanging around this joint, and you exemplify them.

That's fine. I tend to go with my own personal experience when rating/reviewing/recommending a place, as I've had positive experiences at places that get negative reviews (i.e. APEX), and vice versa.

That's cool. And I'll continue to offer my opinion that I think APEX is one of the top 3-4 beer bars in Portland.

Also, we still need to get a beer at b2 sometime. Can't believe I haven't run into you there yet.

Coming from you Terry, that is extremely high praise. Pretty sure I don't deserve it, but I sure do appreciate it.

Pretty great John but not as great as the '13 from what I remember. Whereas the '13 was heavenly smoothness this has an edge to it that doesn't seperate it from other top beers. Still the gold standard though. Glad I came.

Could not agree more, and despite my personal feelings about the place, that's what I continue to recommend as well.

Go check it out for yourself and see what you think.

This is why it's a good thing this forum is made up of more than one voice. Everyone can give their input and the readers can choose for themselves whether to give the place a shot or not. I'm not sure why everyone jumps on the folks that voice their displeasure with the place though. It's not like those that have had negative experiences with the place are making it up. Those opinions are just as valid as all the others.

Well that worked out. Hope to do it again sometime soon.

I'm not sure how voicing one's negative opinions of a place makes them a 'hater', but then again I've never really understood that word. I also agree that folks should check it out for themselves as well. I may even give them another shot one of these days ... at some point they may decide to stop participating in some of the things that I find so distasteful in the beer community and not at all in the vein of beer advocacy.

You absolutely should continue to voice your support if you really like the place that much. And I will continue to be a 'hater' and come on here to 'bitch about it'.
