RR just announced that PTY will make its return Feb 3-16 at their brewery with kegs being shipped for Philly distro in early Feb. It's a similar yield as last year so they expect similar accounts to receive shipments. Please share any news!

In past years, the Philly events like Monk's are typically early March

It gets fairly well distributed within the bigger players, but that means everyone gets less, and thus it won't be on for long, so you kind of have to know when it'll be tapped. I'd suggest you visit a few places and see if you can get an idea. I'd try Memphis Taproom, Local 44, Monk's, Devil's Den, Alla Spina, Tria, Flanigan's Boathouse, Capone's... you get the idea.

Bookmark this page and keep an eye on it for updates. Jared does a great job letting us know when and where PtY is showing up

I've had this beer every year since it has been distributed to philly. It is good, no doubt. When I first had it many years ago, I thought it was the best beer I ever tasted. Since then, the craft beer industry has exploded and I've gained access to many ,many more outstanding IPAs including things like Treehouse and Alchemist. PTY, while still great, pales in comparison to some of the other great offerings out there. Don't waste your time or money waiting in line for this beer. If it "falls in your lap" then great, otherwise take a trip to NH or Vermont and save yourself the aggravation.

Firstly, I wouldn't say that PTY "...pales in comparison...", but I generally agree with the gist of ColonelW's idea in that there are a lot of other great IPAs available now that weren't before, and thus by comparison PTY is not the monster it once was. And on that note I'll also agree with him that unless it "falls in your lap" it's not worth going to great lengths to sample, but I'd say that about almost any beer - and I'll also say, if you want to, why not? It's your life. Don't let anyone tell you what to do! Finally, I am 100% in agreement with the Colonel in that a trip to both New Hampshire and Vermont (even Maine) are in order - beautiful country, great people, excellent beers! It makes a wonderful vacation if you can afford the time and money - but for some, maybe just getting some PTY is a more appropriate option.

You lost me here. Vermont is a 6-8 hour drive from Philly - how is that less aggravation?

Other than that - I agree that there is plenty of good beer available without having to stand in lines or attend special events.

Capone's always taps it on a Saturday with other big beers and makes an event of it. I wonder if that qualifies as serving it "old" considering that other bars tap it pretty much when they get it.

    This x 100

For the time and effort people put into trying to find this, it's just not worth it. PtY was probably amazing years ago, but has been surpassed on multiple levels now.

But if you haven't ticked Younger yet by all means seek it out. Hulmeville Inn usually hands out tickets and it's tapped at 5. Grey Lodge leaves clues as to when it will be tapped and it's not unusual to be able to have a second glass.

Looks like Monk's is tapping a keg of PtY on Monday 2/20 for a cash-only charity event. I'm considering making the trip up for it. From prior experience, (I'm sure it varies year to year), does anyone have any advice as to how early I'd need to get there generally speaking in order to get a pour of PtY? The event starts at noon.

BTW the rest of the tap list looks great:
    Russian River Blind Pig
    Russian River Consecration
    Russian River Damnation
    Russian River Pliny the Elder
    Russian River Pliny the Younger
    Russian River Supplication
    Cantillon Fou Foune
    Cantillon Gueuze
    Dieu de Ciel Peche Mortel
    Lost Abbey/Wicked Weed Ad Idem

Well, in a way it actually would make more sense since that is how Russian River (incorrectly) pronounces the name.

the pronunciation is irrelevant. pliny/mini/binny or pliny/shiny/hiney. how they spell it is how they spell it.
