9:30 would likely be early enough, though it's hard to be sure (as the line is longer every year, and folks arrive earlier and earlier).

I was checking a beermail conversation I had with a friend last year. He got there at 9:20, and told me there were roughly 20-25 folks in front of him. He had no problem getting a glass or a seat in the back bar area. So if you get there at 9:30, you "should" be OK. Good luck.

For a while they were, but it seems that last year and this a few halfs have shown up as well. So basically you weren't wrong, just going (as I was a while back) on some older information.

Currently the line at Monk's looks to be about over a hundred people (4 wide, about halfway up the block).

Didn't the event start at 1130? Those people ain't getting Younger.

I'd be surprised if they were all still in line if the PtY had kicked. Plus, it was about 12:30 when I walked by, so I don't think a 1/2 would kick that quickly.

The Younger event at Iron Abbey was pretty well-run, I thought. Showed up at 10 am and the line was just forming. They started selling tickets at 11 am on the dot. I'm not sure how it was around the bar, but we had a table and just waited for our server to come grab our tickets and bring back the beers. I had the glass in hand by 12:10. I think they could have used another server or 2 for the event, as the poor guy was literally running from table to table for 2 hours straight, and the wait time on drinks got a little long. All told it was a pretty smooth event.

How long until it ran out? Did everyone in line get a ticket, or were there more people than beer?

I agree with Steeeve, it was a well run event but they could have used an additional bartender or 2. There were more people in line than beer and tickets sold out immediately.

Iron Abbey sold exactly 100 tickets (I asked the dude selling them) at 11am. All 5oz glasses were poured by 12:15pm or so. I'll agree with what others said above, they could have used another guy or two working the bar, but this was as well run of an event that you could have asked for. It cracked me up how they were taking drink orders while we waited in line.

The City Tap House yesterday one was pretty smooth too. Showed up at 10:40 and got the 48th ticket out of 65.. Sat around sipping Supplication and eating awesome food till they tapped the PtY at 1-1:30... Service was great. PtY was good. Supplication was awesome!

Now all I need is the DC City Tap House to get the Russian River connection!

That was funny. They delivered a breakfast burrito to this one guy and he had to eat it standing up holding the plate and a cup of coffee. I don't know how he did it.

They definitely needed some extra help from 11 to 1 but the place was basically cleared out by 1:30. My only complaint is that basically the entire tap list for the day was kicked by the time we left. I literally had to order 8 different beers when I got my last one.

I was one of the early ones at Monk's. They still had PtY as of 1pm. Pretty much if you were on line before the doors opened at 11:30 you got a glass.

Sidecar on Friday was a bust. 3:00PM opening.

First person got on line at 11AM. I got there before 2:00. At some point, they passed out tickets to the first 50 and did not alert the rest of the people on line as I never saw tickets passed out. I missed out by about 20-30 people.

Only 50 with tickets got PtY. They made almost 100 people wait an hour for no reason instead of warning us, "Hey! Tickets passed out. Rest of you can leave and stop wasting your time waiting on line."

I guess they got greedy and were hoping that we would wait on line for non-PtY beers, as the place was packed to the brim and without PtY by 3:05.

I think rampant greed overcomes common sense and normal decorum for some of the lucky beer bars who get PtY. PtY sales are just the tip of the iceberg for PtY events; the real money is made on the hordes of people who stick around and order 3 or 4 more drinks along with food, often on a night when they might not normally go out at all. So it's completely understandable that a bar might be a little slow when it comes to telling those shut ouf of the PtY sweepstakes that's there's really no reason for them to stick around, at least not if they're hoping to get PtY. Yeah, it's pretty pathetic customer service to pull something like that, but I can't say it's a huge surprise to hear about it.

I was pretty pleased with the way Monk's handled it today. They took care of the line of people who were there when it opened, gave out PtY as you came in, and then let the masses work to either of the two bars for the rest of the impressive taplist. I'm not sure when it kicked (as of 1pm they were still cranking out Younger). I was impressed that as long as the line was when the doors opened Monk's managed to make it work.

Teresa's tapped their's today as well. While it was fairly crowded, it was relatively low-key (especially when compared to some of the accounts above). Just walked up to the bar, could have ordered two had I desired, and the price was reasonable. Well done, Teresa's.

Wow, that's a bummer. I thought Sidecar would be one of the "easier" events. Clearly I was wrong.
