Yeah, they looked like 12 oz. pours to me.

Who the hell wants to pay $9 for less than 10 oz? I have no issue with bars selling full 12 oz pours.

You're missing the point. If they cut the price and pour in half, almost everyone would have been served.

I realize that. If the people that didn't get it wanted it that bad, they would've been their earlier. Simple as that. Life isn't fair.

It should be considered that not everyone looking for this beer knows that people line up so early for any beer, especially on a weekday.

My first Younger experience was at Monk's about 3 years ago. It seemed like Monk's employees were periodically counting people in line in order to determine a pour size that would permit almost everyone getting a pour. I think this is a better way of dealing with things. However, that's just my opinion.

Got my pour of PtY at Tria around 3.30PM, 3.5 hours after their tapping of the sixtel. I had to leave work a little early, that was it. The bar was full, but the place was practically empty. I really think this is how PtY tapping should be...announce it 10-15 minutes before tapping, limit to one 6oz pour per person, double the price and give 1/2 to charity. Translation: NO shit show! Sixtel kicked at 5:57PM.

Great beer, somewhere between a Stone RuinTEN and Hopslam without the honey, but I wouldn't chase it again, ever!

^^ I got there at 540 and had one of the last pours. Unreal: I was shown to my own table and brought a glass. No shit show whatsoever. Although I think I'd rather have been around a bunch of rowdy beer geeks than the corny Rittenhouse happy hour scene! :stuck_out_tongue:

I don't know if it being "so easy" took a little away from my enjoyment, but I was also a little underwhelmed. Maybe that's not the right word. Look: it's an incredible beer. When it first was released there was nothing like it. But in a world of Hopslams, Heady's, Sucks, Green Bullets, Hi-Res's...it's not the holy grail it once was. When I got home I poured myself a Hop Ranch and thought: I am thankful to live in a world that contains so many incredible beers.

TLDR: great beer, but wouldn't stand in line for hours for it!

Any word yet from Local 44 or Resurrection? They tweeted a couple weeks ago that a mailing was forthcoming, but there hasn't been a peep since. Did they do some stealth thing or have they really not tapped it yet?

The Grey Lodge yet again doesn't get mentioned in this thread until the beer is tapped. Amazing how this and another bar get looked over in threads like these.

I knew about this tapping from an authoritative source, to whom I promised not to divulge the info publicly. I'm guessing people who knew about it were in a similar situation. They did post a cryptic tweet in the morning. I got there at 7.15pm (didn't care whether or not I will get a pour since I already had mine at Tria) and it was all gone. The place was packed, my 3 friends each got a pour because one of them showed up at 6.40-6.45pm and was able to order 3 by himself, i.e no limits. I saw tables with 1 or 2 undrank glasses, clearly people were grabbing more than one and going through them slowly. $6/6oz, by the way.

Sounds like they got less than they did last year. I remember it being a 1/2 and it was going on pretty long.

My only point was that Grey Lodge wasn't a surprise tapping, when you post cryptic tweets and Facebook events titled "Bible Study" a week in advance people are going to catch on.

I completely agree with @mythaeus about Tria's tapping. I didn't get to go, but I passed the info along to a good friend of mine who was grateful it was on still on tap 5 hours after the first pour.

They got a half this year. It went on around 6:30 and the bell rang at 7:17. It was about 30% more crowded than last year.

Weird, I wonder what happened? Years past they've gotten at least 2. I thought for sure they'd have one at Strangelove's.

Figured I would bump this thread since it's about to be a relevant topic again soon..

Lots of good info from last year as I try to plan my first scavenger hunt for PtY, but one question my little trip to the past didn't really answer - how accurate are the tapping times/dates once they are posted? I.e. this year, Monk's says their posted date is not set in stone - is it like that for other places as well? I'd love to try to schedule some time off of work if necessary, but if these dates have been fluid in the past, I'm not going to go nuts trying to chase the perfect time of attack.

It also seems like common sense says I should not try to chase this beer (or at least not at places like this. yikes.) That being said, I'll probably ignore that feeling and jet all around center city like an idiot. Where have your best/most reasonable experiences in years past been? Sounds like Tria and a few places in the burbs did some good work. Is it best to just try and catch a tapping as it's announced vs. tickets and waiting and all that jazz, or is that just too hard to do?

I'll try to answer your questions one by one:

"how accurate are the tapping times/dates once they are posted?"

If there's a listed date, I've yet to see a time when a bar tapped it on a different date. It would be kind of foolish for a bar to do otherwise, as the whole idea is try to get a huge crowd to come in for younger, and to stick around and drink a bunch of other stuff. As for an accurate start time, in my experience it's not at all unusual for a beer bar to start a bit early (assuming they're not tapping it at opening bell, which is often the case). If you think about it, what possible benefit would there be to waiting till the actual start time, if they already have a huge crowd waiting (and of course, there will be)? In other words, if a beer bar plans to tap younger at 5:00, don't come by at 5:00 expecting to get a glass. There will almost certainly be several hundred people in front of you, waiting for their glass.

In the case of Monk's, I can only assume that they figure it doesn't really matter when they announce tapping of their younger keg. There is almost certainly going to be a huge throng of folks lined up to get in, regardless.

If you want to be certain of actually getting a glass of younger, then a ticketed event is the way to go. Some places (TJ's, TND, etc.) won't provide any advanced notice of their keg tapping, so conceivably you could just happen to swing by and find it on tap some day. And if you believe that, I have some beachfront property in the Sahara I'd like to try to interest you in.

Some places will only announce the tapping to their mailing list customers, but even then... those folks always tell their friends, who then tell their friends, who tell their friends, etc.

Outside of getting an over-priced ticket for a single glass of younger, your next best bet after that is to try to get to someplace that is tapping Younger at opening bell. A lot of places have done that in the past as well (Capone's, Pinnochio's, etc.). Just be aware that for events like those, that are typically very well publicized, you will likely need to arrive hours in advance to be sure of getting youger.

To put things in perspective, the last time I was out East for younger (2013), a friend told me about a "secret" tapping of younger at Pinnochio's in Media. We got in line a couple hours in advance, but by opening bell, there were well over 100 people in line (so much for a secret tapping).

Shrug. It's a great beer, but every year the demand/interest seems to increase, and so it gets harder and harder to get any. Good luck.
