Basically, you should start with veteran BA traders. They can help you along, as well as ensuring you'll get your beers. Generally, you will see lots of trade references on their profiles.

Pliny trades mainly dollar-for-dollar ($4$) with like beers (not necessarily same styles, but similar in difficulty of acquiring them and its desirability). For example, trade $25 worth of Pliny for $25 worth of Surly Abrasive/Furious.

Back in the day, Pliny used to trade for a lot more. These days a lot of breweries make comparable double IPAs to Pliny so it doesn't command as much trade value. Shouldn't be too difficult to get.

 

Pliny is easy to get if you live close, such as Heady Topper if you're near it. You're essentially trading for the fact someone can get it fresh for you. The main problem as I can see from the site is most CA BA residents, live in So Cal, most Pliny is in Nor Cal, which will limit the amount of people to trade with greatly. If you go the BA members route of trading.

I live 2 1/2 hours away and generally go buy some every few months. You can easily trade for beers like that, with good locals.

I was in Los Angeles about 2 months ago. I bought 4 bottles of PtE for $20.00 at a Whole Foods.

 

One large difference between Pliny and ht is freshness. Month old Pliny, which is often the case when trading, is dogshit in my opinion, relative to where it starts off. However I think <2 week old Pliny is better than HT at any age.
Essentially, unless you know the age of the Pliny you are getting, trade for HT.

 

Define a good local beer for someone from say, oh I dunno, Illinois?

 

Well Illinois has Half Acre, Goose Island, pipeworks. And I believe Founders, bells and Parennial are distributed there. So thats quite the trade bait. West coast does get some Parennial but not much.

Fresh Pliny is quite amazing, worth $6 in trade I think no more. Then there's shipping, which for me is tough in Nc.
