The two bottles of Lunch I had were carbonated to all hell and had little similarity to Pliny. Need to try on draft.

Can I ask why you are concerned about what others think before you try it? I think prejudice has skewed a lot of opinions on this site, and others, one way or another.

I'd rather read a thread about you cracking it open first without any regard to what other people think, and then reporting your findings

S&S #6 was one of the best beers I've ever had. Almost all Mosaic and it had the flavor of fruits I've never tasted.

Lunch recipe was supposedly a variation on a clone of Pliny, no? Both great beers. Look for the similarities and differences in them as you taste, get in touch with what it is you like and enjoy in each. Savor the greatness of them both.

There are no "best", but trying to find the best is one of the most delicious undertakings one can do.

Never had Lunch, but I popped a Hoptimum last night and thought that tasted a LOT like PtE.

    Pliny > Lunch

Maybe it's just this year's Lunch batch that I wasn't very fond of cause I enjoyed it more in the past, but Pliny is better in every way IMO.

Both are amazing! As a Mass guy it pains me to say it, but Pliny by a whisker.

Heady tops both but like a previous BA said, don't expect to drink any other beer
that day and really enjoy it.

I've only had one bottle of Lunch which probably doesn't make for an iron clad opinion, but I think Pliny to my palate is slightly preferable. I've had quite a bit of Pliny and I really love the stuff when it's fresh as hell.

I haven't had Pliny, but I've had Lunch and a handful of other hype-hype-hyped (D)IPAs. More than anything else Lunch is, like other MBC products, complex, balanced, and very finely carbonated (which I actually prefer, because I'm a believer in the virtues of careful bottle conditioning). However, it struck me as an example of the newer (D)IPAs that eschew aggressive bitterness for carefully-layered, late-boil, flavor-and-aroma-heavy hop character.

But, it's been about seven months since I last had Lunch. That bottle was three and a half weeks old. Lucky for me, I picked up a (now four day-old) bottle yesterday, so I'll be enjoying it again soon :-)

Sidenote, does anyone else wish that Russian River—seeing as they've got the lock on the whole "Pliny" thing anyway—would just go ahead and make a series of (D)IPAs themed after Classical historians?

Herodotus, Thucydides, Livy, Plutarch, Seneca, the list goes on . . .

Pliny is better in my opinion.

I may be off the mark here, but I feel that differences in taste are exaggerated based on expectation of the individual. I'm sure Pliny is great and Lunch is great. To say that one is definitively better than the other is subjective speculation.

    Just drank the dayumnnn beeeerrrrr!

Maybe there should be a separate forum for X beer vs Y beer instead of polluting the Beer Talk forum. Of course that would mean the demise of the Beer Talk forum...

Anyone who had the most recent batch of lunch don't count it. It was terrible compared to what it norally is.

Lunch didn't live up to the hype IMO but I hope Pliney does if I ever get a chance.

Also, I just had Mean Old Tom, "a stout aged on natural vanilla beans," which was equally underwhelming :slight_frown:. The hanover CoOp just got a new guy overseeing their beer selection, and stocked a bunch of MBC brews on the shelves. I got super excited and bought up a ton, since I had heard nothing but good things about them, especially about Lunch. Unfortunately, I have been nothing but disappointed. And not just disappointed that they didn't live up to the hype, but just disappointed in general. I mean, both beers were ok, but really nothing special at all.

I still have a few of their other offerings in the fridge. Hopefully they will end up changing my opinion.
