Finally got to try Mocha Rhino Suit from Alesong; what a phenomenal beer. My only complaint, if you could call it that, is that I was expecting the mouthfeel to be slightly bigger. I hope it's availability stays, as it's definitely a occasional treat. Standard Rhino Suit seemed to move pretty quickly even at it's price range.

Rhino Suit and Ft George Matryoshka are definitely two of the best BA stouts ive had in a while. hopefully i run across a mocha RS, but that doesnt seem likely

Mocha Rhino is delicious...a little thin would be my only complaint however the flavor is there in force! And I love the labeling and wax!

Oh yeah! The wax itself was cave aged in 100 year old bourbon barrels then lightly mocha dusted prior to applying. :astonished: Actually I like that they put a thin layer of wax over the cap allowing for easy removal.

I was a little behind getting to try this, but for those who haven't, Matryoshka from Ft. George is the real deal! KDS is still the king, but Matryoshka is right there. I'm not a fan of fruited stouts, but I even enjoyed the raspberry version.

I don't know. I'm a huge fan of the regular version (of Matryoshka), and I did not feel that adding raspberries and cocoa nibs did anything to improve the original version. Frankly, I thought the raspberry flavor was completely over the top.

The base beer is so damned good... adding pretty much anything to it strikes me as a bad idea. I tried both versions at the Loyal Legion yesterday, and was let down by the raspberry version (but the regular version was excellent).

The regular version of the Matryoshka is on my short list of beers that I order whenever I see it on the tap list. It really is THAT good (IMHO).

Totally agree on the raspberries being unnecessary, but for me the beer was at least drinkable, which is a rarity as far as fruited stouts go.

Is that packeged at all? Cuz, the way a lot of y'all feel about coffee, is the way I feel about raspberries. If it's packaged, consider me ISO.

Never know until you try. I'm no expert, but my sense is that this has zero trade value, which with so few released may work against you because odds are no one who trades is sitting on one.

The comment in the NewSchool article about extremely limited distribution is an understatement. I was over at John's Market place yesterday looking for a suitable beverage to enjoy during the Trailblazer game, and specifically checked to see if they might have bottles of the Matryoshka. Nada. (they still have plenty of KBS bombers however, for anyone who might be interested)

I'd help you out if I could Terry, but I think the likelihood of my ever coming across a stray bottle is extremely low. Still, as Ryan mentioned, it can't hurt to post an ISO in the trading forum. You never know what you may find.

And yes... If you liked the Lizard of Koz, there's a very strong likelihood that you'll like the Raspberry Matryoshka.

yeah its been long gone for over a month. not knowing how damn good it was, i passed up bottles multiple times that i would see at MoC, New Seasons, Whole Foods, etc. By the time one of my friends sent me the "youve GOT to try this" text, it was slim pickens. Luckily Imperial on Division had one bottle left on a random night and i swooped in. Great great BA stout.

Also, I was a little fuzzy when I drank it, but the new Double Mountain Tenacious Ten Rye BA stout was really good. there seem to be a fair amount of bottles floating around town

Chuck's 85th is having their Barrel Roller 2017 May 12/13 and the taplist is pretty stellar.

FWIW, Kulshan now has their basic Imp Stout and Pils available in 17oz bottles.

Enjoyed a few bottles with a couple buddies over the weekend.

Pelican has always sort of been a one-hit wonder for me, as I've never really enjoyed many of their releases, save for the venerable Mother of All Storms. However, Father of all Tsunamis, part of their new barreling program, is fantastic. It's an imperial stout aged in rye barrels, and is up there with last year's rye Abyss, especially at the $11 price point.

We did a side by side with Silver City's Time Traveler, both the BA and non BA versions. While we were thoroughly unimpressed with the non-BA version, BATT is a shining example of what a barrel can do to something. BATT improves tenfold on the base; smooth, warming bourbon and vanilla notes, light oak and alcohol. Extremely balanced and drinkable.

Double Mountain's Tenacious Ten was the second rye barrel aged stout we had in the lineup, and it was pretty unimpressive. The 110 IBUs were pallet crushing. I think I've had three stouts/imp stouts from DM thus far, and haven't been impressed with any of them. Anyone have any recommendations?

Chuck's Barrel Rollers event was great fun and well run; while not a stout, Alesong's Maestro was probably the highlight for me. I'm not generally a fan of american barleywines, but the red wine characteristics I think really rounded out the harshness/bitterness commonly found in them.

Only mildly OT; I'm not a huge Pelican fanboy, by any measure. I split a 22 of their Captain of the Coast, a BA Wee Heavy, over the weekend, and damn if that was not a very nice beer. Scotch Ales/Wee Heavies are near the bottom of my style list, but we thoroughly enjoyed it, and suggest y'all grab a bottle if ya see it.
