I really liked the beer, but found it to have a pretty thin body. Much thinner than Darkenfloxx was.

Reiterating above, I'm not a dark beer fan, but I picked up some Breakside Bourbon-Barrel Aztec the other day, and my cousins and I split it over some pecan pie tonight after a Christmas dinner tonight. It was pretty damn good, and it was fun letting the non-beer drinkers in my family smell and taste it, as most of them dug it. The chilis were present but subtle, and the beer wasn't the Ten Fidy motor oil-style color and viscosity I was expecting, especially given the 11% it runs at. Speaking of, there was good bourbon flavor and heat, but not in a boozy sense whatsoever, so it was remarkably drinkable for 11%. Good stuff.

Not a stout but G-Town's barrel aged 18lb Porter is excellent, might even like it more than Black Butte anniversary..

Yes, it is an excellent beer. And at 12 bucks a growler they're practically giving it away.

Over the weekend I had a Kratovo from 3Mag, which is excellent, and a batch 1 Darkest Hour from Anchorage Brewing, which was phenomenal with almost 4 years on it.

I don't know because I haven't finished reading this thread but when Lagunitas High Westified hits your shelves, try that. It's delicious and a true game changer in the barrel aged stout business. I bought it at $12.99 per 6-pack but I read about people seeing it as cheap as $10.99

It's kind of a bourbon bomb. I don't taste much coffee. But I still like it and the price can't be beat.

I didn't even know that was a thing. How would you compare it to their Major Tompkins (assuming you have tried that)?

I posted about it a few weeks ago, when it was released, on this very thread. And having had both, I'd say--and bearing in mind this is from memory, a single sample of each, and not the sharpest palate around--that Kratovo has more hints of dark fruit, a little more roast, and is overall the more complex, interesting, and better beer. Major Tompkins had more chocolate, and struck me as sweeter, with a super-smooth mouthfeel (they must have used several boatloads of oats in that one).

Both were delicious, and it's perhaps no surprise that Howard's Blend, which was a bourbon barrel-aged combination of the two, was such a great beer. It's one to look for when it comes out again--maybe a year from now--but there won't be much to go around, and, because the secret is sorta already out on 3 Mags, demand will be high.

Thanks for the tip. That beer hasn't (I don't think) come up on this thread, but it does have its very own exclusive "sightings" thread on this forum.

I have tried it, both last year and this, and it is indeed a tremendous beer--for its price. I used to love Lagunitas, and these days I still do, because of beers like this at prices like this, but it's a little more complicated nowadays...

Apparently I need to go back and re-read this thread more carefully.

    !!!

I will keep my ears to the ground for that release. Thanks for the heads-up on that, as well as your thoughtful response as a whole.

Finally made it up to Wander for a pour of Earlybird, their BA breakfast stout. Dulce de leche shines, good coffee, very light roast, nice warming body with hints of whiskey. Dug this one alot, should've snagged a bottle while there. Anyone know if they're still floating around Seattle?

I opened my bottle of Reuben's BA Breakfast Stout with some buddies, and it did not represent memory. There's so much sweet lactose on this thing it was borderline milk. Little coffee, imperceptible barreling. I get that it's an imperial milk stout, but I don't know of too many imperial milk stouts with this much sweetness, particularly after being laid to rest in barrels. Disappointed this time around.

And while not a stout per se, pFriem's Scotch Barrel Aged Imperial Brown is superb. Nice peat and body, clean and flavorful. Recommended for the price.

Don't know about Seattle, but, there's plenty here in town, and at the brewery. If you're jonesing bad, I can send some down to ya. I finally asked for a taste a couple weeks ago, and one ounce was way too much, I found it just a complete coffee bomb. Now then, was at Wander one night last week, and, after several beers, drank a 5oz pour. Didn't find as coffee offensive, may have even said a complementary thing about it, but, after a couple different sours, at least 1 IPA, and about three 3 Ton Barleywines, I'm pretty sure no one should be trusting my judgement in that situation.:rolling_eyes::flushed:

The first batch is in Four Roses barrels. Their single barrel bourbon is my wife's favorite, so I'd love to get a bottle but their wording on Facebook made it sound like the bottles aren't leaving Astoria.
