So I went to a beer fest this weekend with some friends. I'm the "beer snob" of the group. They like craft beer but I'm definitely more serious about it. This one brewery had a wet hop IPA and I noticed that it tasted sort of like onions or garlic. When I mentioned it they all thought I was crazy. No one in my group tasted it. Anybody have a similar experience?

Yeah, I get a metallic taste in some beers, usually stouts.

But has anyone pointed out these weird flavors to others and got a similar reaction?

Some hop varietals are known to contribute onion/garlic qualities. I can't say that I am a fan of that.

I forget what beer it was, but I got a distinct spaghetti sauce flavor from a Stone beer. Nobody else was able to taste it.

You palate is probably a bit more refined that's all. Also, people taste different things in beer as well. I had Rogue Nut Brown Nectar last night i thought it tasted an array of different nuts. When the lady I was with thought it tasted like fig toast.

Yeah I know. I think it might be Simcoe or something. I get a lot in DIPAs like Enjoy By and Sucks.

I mentioned this before, but Abita's Christmas Ale tastes like onions to me. I've had it two different years and it tastes the same, so it wasn't just a bad batch.

I had a IPA at a wedding that was brewed by the resort. Had a fat dough-like sweetness in the aftertaste. Super weird. Kinda ruined a good beer.

I have this experience all the fecking time. Every time my buddy visits from Spain he only wants to drink Guinness but I always get a few other nice beers to drink with him.
As we sup and chat I can't help but mention the flavours and aromas I detect. He maintains I'm talking out my arse but I'm not sure if he is just tacking the micky out of me or he really can't taste the flavours I'm getting.
I guess @Kaz_DemonKnight is probably right though we all taste different things in beer...

Resort IPA. Now that's a new one. Maybe they didn't wanna splurge on the hops?

I like the oniony flavor but sometimes it can be overpowering. The beer I had was good, but everyone thought I was weird for thinking it tasted like that.

Well the more things you drink/eat and are conscience of those flavors the easier it would be to pick out those flavor and smells.

Yeah, I know it's a matter of refined palates. I was just wondering if anyone has gotten the same reaction that I did from others.

I've not had the experience personally, but we often see people on BA making fun of reviews and reviewers because they themselves don't taste what the reviewer describes in a review.

Sort of amazing how some people think they know what flavors everyone else should experience and that they themselves are the International Standard Palate (ISP). :-)
