Had two of those. Zywiec Bp is a metallic mess. Boss, were it not for its small price tag, would never get mentioned. I live in a polish neighborhood. I'm more comfortable with Polish than your idiotic comment suggests

Made by a German brewer. Bear in mind the history of Germany and Poland and the land they have shared/flipped.

A little off topic from what the OP is seeking info on, but I was pleasantly surprised by Poland's craft beer scene on a recent trip with my girlfriend (Polish!). Stayed in the relatively small town of Rzeszow which was equipped with a Brew pub and a handful of craft beer forward bars. Most if not all were Polish beers and all quite enjoyable.

Stand out beers for me were from these guys:

    Thought their IPA was brilliant.

    Cheers,
    Graeme

Thanks for the unnecessary insult, fellow BA. Nothing in your profile indicates that you live in a Polish neighborhood, so I should know that exactly how?

And oh by the way, your opinion apparently isn't shared by many others on this site, so before you toss around insults, you might consider if your expert opinion because of your geographic location is within or outside the rating norm of craft beer drinkers. It's a math thing, ya know. Fact:

I've had many Polish beers both here and in Poland. Having married a woman born in Poland, I'm exposed to all their beer and other delicious foods/alcohol. Some of the biggest brands in Poland have been bought out by Heineken.

Some of the popular brands available here in the US have already been listed. Zywiec, Lomza, Tyskie, Lech, Perla, Okochim, Boss, and some that are slipping my mind. Most are lagers, euro pale lagers, and porters. In poland, they have many other beers that are brewed locally and range from awful to pretty darn good. Wish I had untappd the last time I was there to keep track.

Many of the big beer fans in Poland do import many beers from Belgium, Germany, and Czech since geographically they are very close or border Poland. My next trip their should be very interesting since I have family who has now moved to Belgium.

    Yo
you were more than willing to assume I don't like to step outside of my comfort zone.

My wife is Polish. I live in a small polish section of a large town. I have four polish delis and butchers within walking distance. I have sample countless Polish beers. Each sucked a little more than the next.

I drink German with Polish eats. I know I'm smart for doing so.

Have a nice day and enjoy your shitty Pole lager swill

Thanks for the brief verbal tour of your neighborhood. But I notice you forgot to mention the ratings which are quite in variance with your highly educated opinion, which is apparently based on where you llive.

And just FYI, Mr. Neighborhood Expert, the three beers I wrote about, Zywiec Porter, Okocim Porter and Black Boss Porter are all Baltic Porters, aka Ales, not lagers.

I am sensing a trend here. I was a member of the club as well. Dated a Polish girl who introduced me to Polish beer.
Is this some great conspiracy by Polish brewers?

I'm on the same page as you.

Harpoon's beer was inspired by Brackie Mastne by Cieszyn / Bracki. It was a top-fermented amber beer brewed for the 1200th anniversary of the brewery.

I also had the same thought as you regarding "old ale." You could read into it either way.

Harpoon's beer would be fantastic as a seasonal six pack. Too bad it's neither of those things.

Except a Godziskie shouldn't be sour. Fritz Briem gets it wrong yet again with an historical beer. His Berliner Weisse is way wrong, too.

No, that's a Lichtenhainer. A completely different style. Grodziske/Graetzer should not be sour.

Actually all three of those are bottom-fermented.

Rzeszow was my favorite town in Poland. Had a tour and tasting at a local distillery after visiting a brewery and it was a night to remember. Perfect sized town in my opinion. Can't wait to go back.

Interesting, thanks for the info. More google research agrees with your assessment. You mention the Fritz Briem Berliner was (is?) way off. What would you recommend for a traditional Berliner? Do you have a preference for any non-traditional Berliners?

Well then, you need to start doing a lot of educating. I did some searching before my last post to make sure I wasn't mistaken and every source I went to referred to Baltic Porters as ales, including this website.

Michael Jackson in the 1990s pretty much created the term "Baltic Porter" to describe the higher alcohol porters brewed in that region of the world (modeled in part after Russian Imperial stouts exported from the UK) most such porters were by that time bottom-fermented using the brewers' house standard lager yeast.

The only one that I know is right is pretty much unobtainable: Andreas Bogk's:

Very nice and presumably will get sourer with age.
