NO! You're a heretic and you are obviously a relic who can't accept the lazy, simplification of how beer is brewed! Um, let alone marketed.

And history means nothing because the internet tells us so! :grinning::stuck_out_tongue: (yeah, my tongue is firmly planted in my cheek)

I like hearing @marquis differentiate between the categories "ale" and "top-fermenting beer". The most important lesson is that our definitions on this site should not be seen as absolute, and that other cultures in the past, and in different locations break beer categories apart very differently.

Plus, why should top fermentation/bottom fermentation be the most significant divide in beer? Is it really the most significant variable controlling flavour? Chimay Red and Celebrator have a lot in common. A LOT in common.

I do remember the first time I had an Optimator on tap and the waitress told me that it was a stout. That was in San Antonio.

Again I agree with you completely, but this genie is not going back into that bottle here anytime soon. I am sure there will be some provision made for the future yeast situation, and for that matter I am sure the number of styles will become larger and even more superfluous, despite folks like you and I arguing against. Cheers!

Although Jack's Abby is one of my favorite breweries (they brew lagers exclusively) I am an Ale man.

Gotta say -- that's the first time I've ever heard that. I got into a "discussion" with bar tender who tried to tell me that Doppelbock meant "double dark" and there was no reason people should be getting so tipsy on such a beer. :grinning:

Due to the much wider range of beer styles that fall into the ale category, it’s certainly ales, but I do enjoy a good lager now and then.

I really love lagers, but chose ales because they represent a larger percentage of my purchasing.

Correct; and no, not about the origins of lager and ale and porters and the proper terminology and categorization - the site has a list. Two styles: ale and lager. I used it. What's to debate? Ale or lager category. Pick one. Or not.

You don't have to chose. You don't even have to post. And the poll was not a tool to help me choose my beer  I'm not even vaguely trying to suggest that anyone drink one beer or another. I hope you weren't suggesting that anyone who creates polls or opinion threads is but a "semi" beer advocate...

The poll doesn't ask which style is "better" :astonished: The poll's sole purpose was to reveal the disparity between ale and lager preference among craft drinkers. It's a popularity poll.

Only implying you were by creating such a divide.
The poll was meant for everyone to choose -- isn't that what a poll is, a choice between options?
And that doesn't prompt a discussion of favorite, or best? C'mon man, your sole purpose in launching this thread was to prompt argument, that's plain as day on this site with your 2 "choices." If you can't own up to that motive you're showing your true colors to all of us, and you're right, it's not worth anyone who has any inkling of fair play to post on the thread.
