I'm in the same boat as dmoser. I don't use any site or service to keep track, but I do try to try different beers I haven't tried before. I don't consider a tiny tasting as a tick.

I voted "I tick and I'm ashamed" because I don't like the ticking mentality and I think it's kinda silly to keep track and be proud of all the different beers you've tried even if I'm guilty of doing it myself.

i don't really know (care) what you're asking, but if you want to know if i tick, you can tell me. insofar as 'ticking' refers to anything, i always figured it was trying beers without enjoying (or even intending to enjoy) their taste, just so you could say/know you've have them. i don't do that, but if you have some other definition of tick, maybe i do.

in other words, i choose option:

"it depends what you mean by 'tick' as to whether i do or don't tick, but either way i don't care, and i don't care if other people tick either. do whatever you want."

I agree, not everyone has an equally perceptive palate. And there are a whole range of factors that can affect even the the most experienced taster. Time is a huge consideration in order to thoroughly address a beer's development in the glass or, in the case of cellarable brews, its evolution over a long period of time. The most knowledgeable wine drinkers I know buy classed growth Bordeaux or Premier/Grand Cru Burgundies by the case for percisely that reason.

Palate training does take time and though I'm not a big fan of the whole ticker culture (and, as you mentioned, its 'bad' connotations) there are few better ways for the inexperienced taster than just starting to sample as wide a range of beer as possible and making notes.

I know this from experiences in beer judging.First impressions are all you get and very often first impressions don't last throughout the glass or the one after that. A brewer friend talks about "show pony" beers which do well in competitions yet which aren't actually good beers to drink by the pint.
Having said that, there is a guy over here who has tasted over 40 000 different brews and doesn't count any sample of less than half a pint.

I buy what I like and drink what I like. I record the news ones through a review because keeping the bottles/photos of the labels is too cumbersome. I'll grab the occasional oddity but for the most part I only grab what I was searching for

I must have developed a different idea of ticking. I do note the beers I've tried but don't do reviews since by looking at my list, I know which ones I enjoyed more than others. As far as the sample sizes, in order to do reviews, I believe you need to try a beer twice, in at least 12 oz. samples, and especially if it was difficult to obtain. When you taste the hype, it may throw your perception off. You also need to differentiate between the first colder sips and the last warmer sips to judge how the flavor profile changes.

What most people don't realize about ticking beer is that there is a secret number of beers that, once you have reached this number, a prize patrol van rolls up to your home and you are given the ultra secret ticker prize by the owners of the ten most obscure craft breweries in the country.

Ticker reviews generally are very helpful. I love getting the information about which beers are real malty tasting and which have some real good hop flavor in them, and not having to waste time with reading more than twelve words.

My ticker pride is so high I've got a shrine to nickd in my cellar ;-). That being said I think a full beer review should be done on a pour of at least 6 oz (depends on the beer). I tick 5 oz. pours in my "Hads," but I won't write a review for a taste that small.

I tick but I'm not someone that has to always try something new. I keep track of them as I try anything new but it's really no big deal to me.

No, and I barely know what the concept even entails, although this thread has helped. I just drink beer, and remember the ones I like.

I tick in the sense that I just like to have an 'oh yeah, I drank that'. Too often I see a beer that I'd like to try and find out (thanks to my own 'ticks') that I've already tried it. So, I'm not hardcore or obsessive, but I do like to 'had' everything I've had and review occasionally for fun.

I drink beer to drink beer. I like to try new beer when I come across it but I do not see anything wrong with that. I drink what I like regardless if it is new or an old favorite. I also track my beers on untappd, it is fun and it is for the social aspect and not keeping track of "accomplishments".

Call that what you will but that is how I drink and will continue to drink.

I love trying new beers, its a constant quest trying to find that next favorite to occupy my fridge. I like keeping track of the journey.

I tick, and I certainly don't feel ashamed about it. People think I am crazy since I rarely if ever drink the same beer twice, and I think they are crazy for drinking the same beer everyday when there are thousands of beers out there waiting to be experienced.

You guys should join the club.

I hear a lot of people on BA say this but don't understand how it's possible. Do tickers never buy a 4 or 6 pack of something? And if you enjoy a beer, why wouldn't you want to drink it again? I love to try new things also but will always go back to the beers I love.

If by ticking you mean trying many new beers in order to solidify my lifetime starting lineup and/or identify for what I will go to great lengths to obtain several times per year, then I'm guilty as charged. However, it pains me greatly when I buy a bomber or pour of something that isn't up my alley...therefore, I don't consider myself a true ticker.

I buy singles if at all possible. Now if I am going to a party or something sure I'll grab a six pack of Finest Kind or something to drink that night, but if given the choice most nights I will try something new instead of revisiting a beer I've already had.

I counted myself in the ticker and proud portion, but only at world of beer. They have a loyalty program that rewards you for trying different beers so when I go I always order something different and if I find a beer I really like I'll usually end up buying it at the store. At 50 beers you get a tshirt, 100 gets you a tshirt and mug that can be filled for $5 on Tuesday's, 250 gets your name on the wall and a Nike dry fit golf shirt, 500 gets you a party with a $250 bar tab. So far I'm at 320 and counting.
