Ok, I'll be honest here too - I spent 22 years in the military and never met one person who espoused the virtues of shootin' people up because they were racist. Inflammatory much?

I get it, you have an axe to grind with regard to the military, but this discussion pertains to drinking age and responsibility therein of. If military service does not qualify one to drink at an earlier age (as your opinion) based solely on perceived responsibility than great, I am glad you have an opinion. What does not make sense is trolling military people with such a ludicrous and hateful statement.

By the way, according to the news a 41 year old in AZ was apprehended for shooting several people, and he actually IS a skinhead racist that wanted to shoot people. He is not a military fellow, and 20 years over the legal age to drink.

You can be legally married and a parent, well under 21. That's about as big of responsibility as you can get. Fe me, military service exemption made sense when the draft was in place.

We used to go to the pub at lunchtimes when we were at school , there was no problem as the masters drank in the other room.We were well aware of each other but applied live and let live.

Regarding drink/drive it seems to me that the young ones seem very responsible regarding this. It's the middle aged men who seem to do it most.

That has little to do with a "legal drinking age" and everything to do with driving DUI. There is no logic in saying that because 19 year olds might drink & drive that the legal drinking age should be over 19.

5th Ohio agree to disagree. It doesnt take too much logic to know that there would be more deaths due to duis if we lowered the drinking age, as it is common knowledge that 19 year olds on avg are worse decision makers than people over 21.

    Why 21??? I make better decisions at 31 than 21? Maybe 30 is a good cutoff . . .

I started drinking well before 21. I lived in Sweden when I was 17 and had fake ID for 18 the legal drinking age. It was a fun year and it seemed that 18 worked for the people of Sweden and myself. With that being said there was so much drinking in college and so many bad decisions that if it was legal to drink at 18 I would probably be dead or would have dropped out of school as I am not sure I would have been able to handle the college bar scene at 19 years old.

Perhaps the best solution is 18 years old but cap the ABV at 6%? Start off slowly and work your way up.

Until this country is ready for some major reforms, I say leave things as they are.

And as for the "old enough to die for their country" argument...

You can be a soldier at 18, true, but the average soldier is supervised, disciplined, understands the notion of consequences, understands basic concepts of respect for authority, and follows orders and rules and regulations.

The average 18 year-old is no soldier.

So, if you want to make exceptions for 18-20 year-old soldiers in war-time, hell yeah, that's fine - do what you want - you get a free pass.

But for the average 18-year-old? No fucking way.

Wow, so many central planners in here that know exactly what's best for people at every age.

You all should run for office.

It's funny, when I was a teenager I thought 21 was too old. Now I'm in my 30s and sometimes think 21 is too young. But in all seriousness, I agree with the cliche that if you can serve then you should be served. So 18 it is.

I find its a lot easier and more common on this site to pick arguments apart than to provide solution.
