I get your point. So you're saying that implicit in the question is basically that hops has to be a prominent featured flavor and not a pils or lager and that it's an American style ale (basically an APA or IPA). That makes the poll less interesting for sure, but it makes sense. I like your list better (add warrior!) maybe because I'm not from a land down-under.

Yeah it would just need to be a list where a majority of the people could say "oh hey i had a cascade pale ale, i've also tried a few citra IPAs."

It's not anything against european hops, it's just not useful in making a list when you only have 10 options, and most have no idea about those hops.

I've heard great things about Vic Secret but haven't had a chance to try anything single-hopped with it. I was told by a brewery owner that it will be one of the more popular hops in the very near future.

My answer was Amarillo after drink the Suparillo from Other Half which was the best beer I've had in 2016 thus far.

Citra, amarillo, and cascade in combination.

But I have a special place in my heart for EKG and Hallertau.

I've got no problem with the OP. IPAs and APAs are extremely popular and there are some amazing single hop examples being brewed right now. I think the poll's pretty legit.

That said, I made a tongue-in-cheek comment above about noble hops anyway, and will just add, a hop like Saaz is known for its relatively low bitterness and distinctive aroma. It may not be XTreme, but its spicy, earthy flavor profile is as easy to pick out and identify as most other hops, and is enjoyed by many beer drinkers. If folks don't know what it's like, try a Pilsner Urquell. I think Sierra Nevada has a Saaz-forward beer, too.

During a trip to Germeny a 3 months ago, I was picking up a fair amount of hop flavor and aroma in Helles beers from Franconia and Oberfalz. Munich Helles makes you search for the hops.

There are Pilsners that have ample noble hop character, often Hallertau Mittelfrüh. Keesmann Herren Pils was wonderful. Then there are Kellerbiers with hop flavor, Mahr's U is a favorite.

You are completely wrong. Noble hops and British hops have a more balanced composition of hop oils, you might realize what you taste is hop flavour because you have a narrow understanding of hops. If you look at American varieties, they have a lot of myrcene oil (pine, grapefruit, tropical) compared to other oils such as farnecene and humulene.

Are you saying that noble/British hop profiles aren't featured in stouts, or they aren't distinctive in general?

    no, not in general.

    I'm saying:

    a) americans LOVE to hop the crap out of everything, especially showcasing a single hop. Hence, many americans can claim they understand or enjoy specific hops in hopped up beers.

    b) many styles such as porters, euro lagers, wheats, etc, are not usually a bouquet of hop aroma (yes I understand pilsners are plenty hoppy with european hops), and many of those styles use european hop varieties. Not to the fault of the hop, however.

    c) many english styles are not as widely consumed here in america, therefor the european hop varieties are not as well known to the masses.

    d) so making a poll of only 10 "favorite hops" is better off using current, popular hops that many people on this website can recognize. Just for the sake of the poll.

If we're talking American hops I'll go with centennial. Hallertauer Hersbrucker is a great subtle one though.
