There are others besides humulus lupulus. Many on the market are hybrids of a N. American hop and a European hop. Neomexicanus is getting attention or late.

Neomexicanus is still a variety, not enough distinction to call it a new species. Humulus japonicus is the only widely recognized other species in the genus Humulus and it's not used in brewing. Many hops are simply cultivars, bred to express one aromatic over the others.

I have a really hard time deciding anymore, as I consider four or five hops to be my favorites, but if I had to pick just one it would probably be Galaxy. I really want to try more Nelson beers, though.

Not a horticulturalist, so I learned something. Stan H called them varieties in his blog, should have read that first.

what would be some examples of an el dorado focused beer? i hear oniony flavors pop up quite often as a descriptor of hops, ive yet to experience this. wondering if its a hop thing or taste bud/genetic thing (or both!)

As a UK homebrewer I tend to use mainly UK hops. On that list it's got to be Galaxy. My own galaxy beer has received great reviews, google Dennis's Kings Galaxy Delight. When boiling Citra all I smell is cats piss.

Galaxy and Citra have been in my homebrewing rotation a lot for the summer. I just started using Kohatu and Huell Melon this summer to great results. A nice tropical juice bomb ipa that needed a tad more haziness. As you can assume I am trying to make an ipa in the vein of Tree House or Trillium.

It's turning to fall now so I'm gonna start doing some stouts and doppelbocks.

Honestly, it's easier for me to pick out my least favorite over my most favorite. But for the sake of the poll, I'd pick other because currently I'm in love with beers that showcase Mandarina Bavaria and Huell Melon hops. I just HATE hops associated with a "burnt rubber" flavor (and don't give me any crap about yeast autolysis or murcaptan, home brewers! I know.)! I'm looking at you, Chinook!
