Most of what I purchase gets cellared for special occasions - I don't drink alot, and when I do drink, I enjoy sharing with friends. Got about a half-dozen bottles right now in the cellar. A couple will be opened at my friend's wedding in October. The rest will be saved for other occasions - holidays, birthday, major sporting events, etc.

I voted for 'other' in the poll. I don't have a 'cellar', per se, even though I use that name. What I do have are a lot of beers I haven't gotten around to drinking yet. Same goes for saving beers for special occasions. I only have beers for special occasions because I haven't drank them yet.

I swear, my cellar is a freaking O'Henry tragedy with all the stuff I really want to drink but don't want to loose..... I hate getting a hold of a special beer. I love the thought of obtaining it, I love the thought of drinking it and I love the idea of having had the chance to enjoy it, BUT I hate the thought of it not being in my cellar. To a certain degree I have loosened up a little and in fact, posting and sharing the experience on WBAYDN, NBS and the Cellar thread has made me enjoy loosening up a little more. For this, my in treatment schizophrenic cellaring, I have voted "other"

I do however have just a few special occasion beers. BB GBS for Thanksgiving and a Samichlaus Classic for Christmas Day. Still trying to find other opportunities to do special day beers.

I actually got $80 for the 4-pack of BCBCS, $50 for the KBS and $60 for the '11 DL. It was worth it! I have more and have already had plenty.
I wrote that and thought it looked depressing too lol. Im a college student and needed a few bucks!

I agree. But it came to me as well that if there weren't enough special occasions, why not make it a special occasion by opening up that special beer. Drink up and be merry!

The people I hang with at special occasions (holidays and family gatherings) are wine drinkers. No need to wait to enjoy a beer I am excited about.

Glad I'm a little more conservative with my 'special' beers. Every time my dad came over would be one of those occasions haha

    Other for me as well.

I mostly age special ones to see how they change over time and for S&G. Thinking my birthday this year might be a good day to open a few I've held onto for a couple years. We'll see.

I selected the first option, but it's a mix of one and two.

For the most part, yes, I save special beers for special occasions. Some bottles I buy with an idea of when I'm going to open them- sometimes it's for a special occasion like a holiday or major life event, sometimes I'm working on verticals. A lot of the bottles I have are purely for experimental aging, so there's no set date for when I plan to drink them (more of a general timeframe) and therefore can be enjoyed on whimsey. Very few bottles I have are being aged to specifically mellow out alcohol (namely Pugachev's Cobra). And then there's some bottles I really enjoy and just want to save for a later time so I tuck them away.

I save all my special beers. Either for special occasions or bottle shares with friends.

But only if there cellar worthy / barrel aged. Others don't hold up so well.

It depends on what you call special beer and what you call a special occasion. For me special beer is a beer that is a little more expensive than normal craft beer and a little harder to get (ex: Saison Brett, Saison Du Pont, Abraxas, Sump, beer that may be easy to get in other places but for me it's tough to get or expensive). For me a special occasion is pretty much any time that I don't have to work the next day and I have time to enjoy the beer. So I guess I drink special beer on special occasions.

If your definition of special occasion is a promotion, or wedding, or graduation, then I don't really drink special beer on those occasions. I would rather spend time with other people than focus on the beer.... also I don't want to share my special beer.

    Other.

Some beers are hold for a specific special occasion. Some beers are in line. Other beers are in cellar purgatory: not in line to be consumed, and not on hold for a special occasion; just there.
