From the Underground Social Polling Department... ...Inspired by this thread...

Okay, people: I'm not asking which state has the best breweries necessarily (though that may be a factor), but which is the best state to live in regarding the distribution and availability of the most and best of beers...

Now there's 50 states, but only 10 poll slots, so you're gonna have to suck it up if your state didn't make the list :grimacing: - you can select "other" and stake your claim. I chose the top 10 most heavily populated states (per the US Census Bureau), but omitting Georgia (#8) - since I don't see a lot of Georgian BAs - to provide an option for "other"

    Throw down, BA... :sunglasses:

I would guess IL (i.e. Chicago) or Pennsylvania (Philly). Unfortunately for me many if not most don't make it to Southern IL :slight_frown:

I guess I'd have to study seekabrew.com to see what state has the most breweries available....otherwise, I don't know what other states get...I know a lot of them are better that SC

I think according to seek a brew new jersey has the most breweries available. However the site is not up to date with a lot of breweries that have since gotten distro to different areas, and there are plenty of breweries not listed on the site.

If you count distro to any part of a state as distro then illinois, pennsylvania or new york would win simply because of chicago, philly and nyc respectively. NY gets pretty solid distro regardless so I might say it is the best distro state.

I agree that the site is not 100% accurate, I didn't realize IL and PA were so high up on the list

Vermont should be on that list. NOT because of the breweries. Their out of state distro is pretty impressive.

Being on the NJ/NY border is definitely the best of both worlds- I might give the edge to NY, though (especially if we're considering imports).

NJ needs to be on this list. Ok, that is all.

Why the hell is PA on there and how do I vote for all other states except for PA?

Edit: I'm in Pittsburgh and realize that Philly does get some good beers, but they are limited to so few spots they really don't exist for the state as a whole. That and the system in PA being such an anachronism in general (we just got 12 packs! this weeks, but who cares). I'm not intimately familiar with all other states, but when I travel it seems that many other states don't have the restrictions we suffer here--both wine and beer, both variety and pricing/taxing.

If this poll was on regions rather than states, the NYC metro area would be near the top if not the best distro in the U.S. since it covers parts of 3 states.

lol - I was gonna bump North Carolina for NJ (which is the 11th most populous state), but I wanted to go with the actual order as much as possible - I think (based on the thread that inspired the poll) Colorado is fairly full of good beer, too, but I needed some kind of guideline for picking the poll choices, and I wanted to stick to it.

Our distro is really really good when you consider the amount of breweries and the amount of places to buy said beer, but because of our 12% ABV cap (ie no Bourbon County) I will not vote my state.

Oh, and for the curious, I see that SeekABrew getting mentioned a couple of times, so lest I be remiss, here is a quick link. Great site for seeing which brewers distribute where, and how states compare in terms of distribution.

Realize that, having inordinate amounts of time on my hands while drinking, I wasn't looking for too much of a "by-the-numbers" challenge as much as I just wanted you guys to fight amongst yourselves regarding whose state is best, even though the answer will clearly always be NY - in all things (despite what California thinks)...
The only thing bringing NY down this year is the Knicks  lol

    Cheers

*you know not to take me particularly seriously, right?*

I am from NC, I wanted to vote for my own state but I knew it was not the best. Although we are not shabby either. Also Seekabrew misses a lot of beers that have come to NC in the last year or so, which has been a lot! For instance we now get Troegs, Duclaw, and very recently Westbrook and that is just three of the bigger ones that I have noticed.

We also recently got very limited and very expensive distribution of Jester King and Prairie in the last few months.

I am going to leave the initial post as is but I noticed seekabrew has updated those because I explicitly remember looking not too long ago and Troegs was not listed but it is now.

Not sure what the point of the poll is if we can't factor quality of breweries. If we are talking sheer number of breweries Seekabrew gets us close enough to project that.

Yes, Texas gets more breweries distributing than I can find in St Louis, but not by a drastic amount. I've shopped on business trips in Dallas and Houston and did get some good stuff but I'll I'll confess I really struggled to narrow down my selections that were available in San Diego.

If I did not have Founders, Schlafly, and Perennial it would not be easy to find a trade partner in California.

I can't honestly vote because I don't know every state's distribution. I'd almost be inclined to say Illinois based solely on the fact that they probably get just as much as Ohio gets and also gets Three Floyds regularly. I find it hard to find Three Floyds regularly in Cincinnati. I hope someone can prove me wrong and tell me where I can find Three Floyds in Cincinnati, but so far it's very hard to come by. I finally scored a bottle Friday. That's after asking for it at various locations for three weeks. I'm not sure about California or anywhere on the west coast. I'm hoping to see someone in the know about distribution commenting on this thread. I would like to know as much about beer distribution as possible from this thread. By the way OP, nice thread topic.

Politicians and businesses are constantly seeking loopholes to rules and regulations, and I've read too often that both have come together nicely in Wash. DC. (Of all places.) I believe that DC can get any brewery's distribution that chooses to send their beer there.
