If nothing else was affected, what would you choose as the ideal ABV for your beer?

7-9%. Usually I want to drink about 2-3 beers and that creates just the right amount of buzz to feel good but still be functional.

6.5 to 7.5. More than that it makes it hard to enjoy more than two in certain situation.

I like booze, have a good palate, but hate liquor, makes sense I'm in the 10-12% range.

    For me...

    During the day = 4-6%

    Evening/night-cap = 10-12%

Before I saw your poll selections I was going to select 6-7 percent, but I'll go with the 7-9 percent. I'm also in your 'old fart's' club, and I agree with your sentiment. Whatever the alcohol level might be, I can handle it, but I just won't want to have more beers if the ABV is too high. (And my evenings sometimes last longer than one beer.)

10-12 for me because I generally drink bombers and the larger European bottles and I try to get in about 20% ABV in an evening, so one larger bottle at 10ish% allows me to enjoy the flavor and still get just to the point of tipsy without feeling all bloated and wanting to take a leak every five minutes.

Wish the poll had 5-7, instead of 4-6 and 7-9. I'd go for 7% as ideal, but would not want a steady diet of 9%.

5-8 is idea for me most days. Not an option though.

For 0%, sometimes it would be cool to have my favorite beers for breakfast, lunch, at work, at school, driving home, etc without having to worry about the consequences of drinking alcohol. It would be pretty bad ass to sit at my desk and sip some FBS or two hearted ale whenever I wanted.

On the other hand, it would suck to have 0% beer all the time.....so I suppose I'll have to stick to drinking at socially acceptable hours and places. So I'll answer 6%.

Well, I came here to be all "but but but if the ABV is different, then the beer will taste different so I can't answer!!!"

And then I read draheim's initial post and I can't really disagree with anything he said, hence my vote for 4-6%. I think for me, it all boils down to a desire to feel a buzz, but not get plastered. And if you get much lower than 5-6%, the volume of liquid you have to drink can be an impediment to your gut (at least mine).

So my ideal would honestly be right on the line between the 4-6% and the 7-9% choices. If I was going to pick a range out of thin air, it would be 6-7%.

0% ideally, so that I could drink all of my favorite beers anywhere, anytime, with no negative consequences (calories aside of course). It'd be great to have a beer with my family without being shunned and stigmatized for drinking alcohol...

On the other hand, for those moments when I just want to get a nice buzz and hang out with my brother and cousin and play Xbox, anything in the 5% - 8% range is just perfect for me.

My favorite beers of all time have generally been around 8-10%, I think, but I also love BCBS (and its variants) all the way up there at 14%. I think once a beer breaches around 15% it starts to take on a bit of novelty that even if it is fantastic (Chocolate Rain, for example) it has a very similar quality that all those other 16-18% brews have as well. But I've never really been a fan of "session" beers either, not sure why.

I go along with this line of thinking. Jumpin' Jesus on a pogo stick: I love high ABV beers, yet if in some sort of dream world all beers had to be in one range of ABV, this would do it for me. It would enable more consumption of some of those tasty high octane brews without hammering my liver in the long run or brain pan in the morning.

Still, it's hard to imagine a fine doppelbock or any of the myriad of double/extreme styles of beer tasting the same if their ABV were tamed by a 6% limit...
