I have quite a few cases of never used unopened quart amber bottles with black poly seal caps. Has anyone ever bottled home brew with poly seal caps?

I'd say you have a better chance than the metal and cardboard caps.
On a sidenote some growlers have thinner glass than 12 or 20 oz bottles. If you're doing an ESB or Stout that would be preferable to a high carbed Hefe. Either way you should test it out before wasting a batch of beer to find out that it didn't work. 1/4tsp of sugar is just over 2 volumes of CO2 for a 12 oz bottle. 1tsp/growler to test and see how it goes?
