So, I picked up a bottle of this today. I cracked it a little while ago, and it's almost completely flat. Now, I know this has been a problem for the brewery, but my real question is whether anyone knows (or thinks) that the crazy amount of yeast in the bottle is a result of these problems. In other words, did Port add so much yeast to each bottle just in order to (try to) get full carbonation?

I don't even think they know.
If you want to drink their stuff, I suggest you drink it on tap.

Welcome to my world. The 1 beer I will not buy from Port until they get their shit together.

I know the 3/26 bottles had this problem....what date was your bottle?

Ha I'm glad you posted this. On tap this is by far one of my favorite DIPA's, but from the bottle.....IT'S ALWAYS FLAT!!!! I've purchased bottles of this twice and both times, completely flat.......what's the deal....

The joke is most always on you when you purchase their beers... as mentioned above, on tap or not at all.

hilarious. more QC problems from port/LA that will continue to go unaddressed along with all the others. this stuff is of more comedic value than constructive criticism at this point.

It boggles my mind - why won't they address this?

no idea. had bourbon santa's on tap yesterday at the brewery; very nice and unlike my '09 AND '10 bottles it wasn't flat.

damn shame about those hop 15 bottles as i really liked this year's batch on tap.

So... any guess about all that yeast? I've definitely had higher ABV beers conditioned with far less yeast.

I had some on tap recently and it was great, also had some Old Viscosity which wasn't flat, so I got suckered in to the 3-26 batch even though I've been burned before. Fwiw- had a Lompoc C-Note last night that was just as bad.

When I had it there was so much sediment at the bottom of the bottle. It was similar looking to the sediment in a bottle of Rochefort 10.

I really enjoy Port beers, but I think they are getting the official "no bottle purchase" status for me from now on. I have enjoyed some of their beers in the bottle in the past (Wipe Out, Mongo, last batch of Hop-15, Anniversary), but between prices, QC, and the tendency to sit too long on the shelf, they join Green Flash hoppy beers on the banned list. Too many other good beers to drink.

On tap on the other hand (especially at the Pizza Ports themselves), I will jump at it.

This has been happening for years. Originally I loved Hop-15, but even 4 years ago they would be hit or miss carbonation-wise. I just avoid all their stuff now......
