I really enjoyed this beer, and it seemed so unusual - a smokey, chocolatey lager: delicious! It occurred to me that I haven't had many beers in the lager style that can't be typified by the pale lager generalities. Being a Southern California resident, what other beers of this ilk should I look for? I really enjoy finding something that really breaks the mold of the monotony of what I already know about.

I believe Port Hot Rocks Lager is a traditional ``stein (stone) beer''. They pour the wort over scalding hot rocks and the malt caramelizes on them, giving the beer a distinct deep smokey, toffee-like flavor. I think it's a rare style (someone else can correct me if I'm mistaken) and the best examples come from Germany, where it originated. Rauchenfelser is one example that comes to mind. Boscos Flaming Stone is another.

I believe Dogfish Sah'Tea is brewed in traditional "stein" fashion?

I think you're right about DFH Sah-Tea. That's good to know. Personally, I've always wanted to try a steinbier and never knew what to look for. I'm not sure how the spices they use impact the flavor though.
