I just tried this English Porter (5.0% ABV) by Stodgy Brewing Co. - a microbrewery in Fort Collins, Colorado. Porters are my favorite & while I'm not picky, I'm rarely blown away. I was pleasantly surprised by this one's quality. It was surprisingly crisp & smooth to the very last drop, with toasty flavors that blended beautifully without overpowering the senses. I just googled it & saw that it won a silver medal in the statewide Colorado Brewers Cup! Perfect choice for a few hours unwinding with friends.

I've never had that brew and would love to try it. I don't recall ever seeing it in my neck of the woods. Is it fresh where you get it?

The beer that is currently called Guinness West Indies Porter is marketed as a throwback recipe to beers made with more hops for export (like IPA or East India porter). Historically, Foreign Extra Stout was known as West Indies Porter for an amount of time. Keep in mind that beers underwent name changes and recipe changes over time. Looking at just the ABV of the beers today, Extra Stout is 5.6%, West Indies Porter is 6%, and FES has an ABV of 7.5%.

I tried the West Indies Porter many years ago when it was in the US in a mixed pack. Unsurprisingly, it did strike me as heavier than ES but not as rich as FES. I also thought it had more bitterness and complexity than ES. Liking it less or more than those other two is just a matter of preference. Maybe I would have a different reaction to the beer if I had it today. I would love it if they put out another mixed pack... particularly if it had Antwerpen.

Some of the staples of my porter loving education from back home.

I'm getting down with a west coast classic, Black Butte porter out of Bend, Oregon's Deschuttes brewing.

Porter is really a style that doesn't need shiny new things. These fucking classics have you covered

The nautical ⚓ them leads me to believe it's named after Adm. Elmo Zumwalt, I believe he was Chief of Naval Operations back in the day.

This is perhaps the finest Porter I've ever had.
Browar Stu Mostow Plum Depths Baltic Porter Smoked Plums 9%
Has Lagunitas-type sweet sugar with smokey chocolate, plum, date, raisin, prune, fig, dark caramel, char, leather.....amazing. As usual, my bottle pics are never as good as can pics but this is my OG pic.

The porter of my dreams. A huge thanks to @Braunmeister_1943 for this one! Robust Porter from Smuttynose.

Poured at fridge temp from a can. Pours jet black with a thin layer of light brown head. The nose is roasted malts, dark chocolate, almonds, earthy, and some black licorice.

The taste is awesome. Molasses, dark chocolate, salted black licorice (very dutch style), charred wood, dark malts, dark German bread, and coffee grounds.

    Lovely beer overall.

The last of the Coal Porter from Atlantic. Lovely chocolate, cocoa, and coffee notes going on. @jonphisher I should have put a can in the box for you, seems right up your alley. If I ever find another pack within the BB date, expect one on your porch!
