Very much agree on Eddy Fit, completely disagree on 4 Beans.

Let's not derail the thread, but I like these browns: Nebraska, Pretty Things, Alesmith, and Bell's.

If you can get it Hill Farmstead Everett, best porter I've ever had. Easier to grab I would suggest Ballast Point Victory at Sea, Founders Porter, Stone Smoked Porter, Stone Smoked Porter with Vanilla Bean, Boulder Shake, Firestone Walker Porter, Maine King Titus.

Victory Storm King if open to imperials, and second Stone Smoked Porter if open to it.

Thanks, all! We opted for a pumpkin beer tasting instead - huge mistake, aside from Dogfish Head's Punkn and Point's Whole Hog Pumpkin Ale, which was the winner hands down.

Porter tasting this weekend though. Will report back.

Why include brown ales , which are not porters , but not stouts which are ?

Another vote for Eugene and Black Butte here. I also think you have to have Founders in there, because I feel they should be part of just about any tasting of standard styles.

I thought Heavy Seas Imperial Pumpkin and Southern Tier Warlock were good. Otherwise, not a big fan of pumpkin beers.

That would be my porter line up

I think that was my fault... I was not trying to include brown ales nor derail the thread. Just pointed out that I had done a porter shootout and was now planning a brown shoot out. Sorry if I confused things!

If you're introducing Baltic Porters, I'd suggest Sinebrychoff.

Honestly, I've never been a fan of Revolution's Eugene. It just doesn't have the mouthfeel and complexity I expect each time. Which is sad, 'cause I love Rev beers across the board.

Warlock is stellar. Pumking - really hope this doesn't devolve into a Pumking/pumpkin beer bashing thread - is amazing. Central Waters Headless Heron is superb as well, and Point's Whole Hog is really, really wonderful.

Do you have any local breweries, or one close by that brews a Porter? If so, get one of those to round out your 5, with the ones you already mentioned.

Seeing as your Porter tasting is back on, I'll recommend one from Wisconsin: Gandy Dancer from Potosi Brewing Co.
Look for the new purple carton packaging for the most recent batch.

It could be that I've only had it a couple times at the brewery. I tend to enjoy beers more where they're brewed. Not sure if this is because they are fresher, a product of the environment, that I'm a little tipsy, tasting better with food or all of the above.

Ha. My guess is all of the above. I should say: I don't think Eugene is a bad porter, but it's just not to my liking. A bit too dry and earthy, perhaps? And like I said, pretty thin-bodied, at least for me.

Man, I so wish a local brewery made a good porter. Our lone local brewery just tapped a peanut butter porter, but given this brewery's history - less than stellar, aside from a Zombie Dust clone, which is pretty tasty - I'm not gonna run out and try it.
