I have recently taken an interest into higher end craft and micro brewed beers such as Weihenstephaner and Samuel Smith's, but your standard grocery stores such as Fred Meyer don't have the greatest selection usually. I was wondering what sort of specialty beer stores were in or around the Portland area?

In alphabetical order to avoid bias:

    Beaumont Market
    BeerMongers
    Belmont Station
    Bridgetown Beer House
    Hop & Vine
    Imperial Bottle Shop & Taproom
    John's Market
    Saraveza
    Tin Bucket

    There's a couple more here.

The fact no one jumped on this guy for saying Weihenstephaner and Sam Smith are higher end just shows how much cooler the beer scene is here than in other areas of the country! Let's keep it that way Portland!

Belmont Station was awesome. Beermongers not too far behind.

This time of year I can drink Vitus daily. One of my favorite all time beers

I love both of those breweries.

Starting with breweries that have been brewing for 100+ years before chasing the flavor of the month is smart. Fundamentals.

Fred Meyer, especially inside the city (like the Broadway or Hawthorne locations) still tend to have a better selection than many actual beer stores in other parts of the country, but you kind of need to know the good from the not-so-good. There are plenty of middling breweries that have a pretty big hold there. Still, Deschutes is always reliable, and Laurelwood's Workhorse is maybe the best Oregon IPA you can find in a 6-pack.

I agree with everything listed above, but apart from those you can usually find some great beers at high-end grocery stores like New Seasons, Zupan's, or maybe Whole Foods. Sometimes you'll even find some limited releases long after it's vanished from the beer stores.

Sometimes it is amazing what you'll find at grocery stores, so don't count them out when visiting Portland...

Was that at Zupan's? Or Beaumont Market (Portland's best keep secret)?

Probably Market of Choice. I'm not aware of anyone else that buys from docks sales and jacks up the prices.

"64 oz. growler of bottle conditioned ale"?

What the hell? That doesn't make any sense. Do they open 5 12-ounce bottles and pour them into a growler?

And then paste a single bottle label "12 FLUID OUNCES" on the growler? And Alan's cool with this (not to mention the OLCC)? So gangsta.

To the best of my knowledge, outside of pre-packaged Rogue stuff, MofC does not do any growler sales.

I'd wager this is from the West Linn Market of Choice. If not, West Linn MofC also has (had?)growler(s) of AftW. They also had bottles for $17.99. I guffawed and went on my merry way.

Really? I go there all the time and never saw this before. Not that I'm incapable of missing something, but almost certainly I'd notice something like this (growler of AFTW).

As for their bottle price, they're buying the beer at the retail price, so $17.99 doesn't strike me as all that high. I wouldn't pay it, because I go to the tasting room all the time and they still have plenty of bottles there. Once HOTD stops off site sales of AFTW, my guess is that MofC will have no problem selling their bottles.

I can say with a very high degree of confidence that Beaumont Market would never do this.

I've only been there twice, so I have no idea if they've ever done it before. But they definitely had at least one AftW growler when I was there on 6/13 around noon. I wouldn't be surprised if it was still there given the $108 price tag.

Oh, I understand why the price is that high. That being said, my guffaw stands.

This is left over from their latest dock sale.

Did they sell them at the release? I haven't seen any mention of them, which is a little surprising.

Growler is still there as of Sat around 6:20. Gonna start collecting dust. Of course, it's warm enough in the store that perhaps it will condition up a little.
