I'm in Portland for the Guided by Voices gig and want to head to Johns Marketplace to stock up on beer before heading back to Canada.

I'm a little out of touch regarding what the finest PNW beers are. Any recommendations of what I should pick up? I love IPAs, English style best bitters, Belgian styles (except sours) and barleywines. Not a fan of stouts!

    Cheers folks.

Pro tip: don't buy any hoppy beers at John's unless they're dated. That's all I got.

3-Way IPA just came out and is really good. On the barleywine side of things, Mirror Mirror is still around in some places.

Or if they're on the aisle end caps as that's where the newest beers are placed. Good tip though. I'd love to know what the oldest beer they have on the shelves is, some of those beers in the import aisles have a nice coating of dust.

Thanks folks. I was last in Portland 3 years or so ago and went to Johns and it was great. Anywhere else I should buy from?

Unless you are going to be down in multnomah village specifically, I would buy from almost anywhere else other johns. Especially for the type of beer you are looking for. Yes johns is an impressive place to beer hunt, but the freshness will get you.

I suggest Belmont station, beermongers, imperial (though smaller format singles are more expensive), hop and vine, hell even New Seasons.
