I everyone, I live in San Diego but will be in Portland (Downtown, waterfront) next week for work. After perusing the Visit Portland thread I will definitely be stopping by Cascade Barrel House, Upright, Commons, and maybe 1-2 more in the downtown area. I would also like to try to get to Breakside but it might be too far north.... Is there anything else that I have overlooked (I love IPA's and Sours)?

Additionally, I l would like to find some De Garde, AA, Boneyard stuff (draft or bottles), never had any of the three.... is this possible and if so any recommendations? Also, are there any places that welcome bottlesharing? I was thinking about bringing some local SD stuff up north with me...

Lastly, is there anything special going on for the NCAA tourney that I should be aware of?

    Thanks for the advice!

Boneyard doesn't bottle but you'll find their stuff all over town. Make sure you also drink lots of Barley Browns beer.

All very true, plus their prices tend to be quite reasonable as well.

Also so have Fat Head's and 10 Barrel both opened up tasting rooms in the Pearl District recently/next week?

Fat Head's has been open for some months now. According to the recent post in the 10 barrel thread, I gather the pub in the Pearl will be open in time for St. Patrick's Day.

Thats cool, would you say Fat Head's is a must stop? Even just to pick up cans?

They're not packaging anything at this location.

Must stop, no. But you said you love IPAs and Fatheads has 3-4 which I think are good-to-great. Also they have a great guest tap selection from local breweries. They are also a 5 minute walk from Baileys Tap Room and Baileys Upper Lip.

Boneyard is pretty abundant around town. Also seek out Barley Browns.....seriously, do it.

I wouldn't say that, but that's only because you have so many other options. That being said, their beer is definitely good, so I don't think you'll be disapppointed if you go.

We were having a discussion about this a week or so ago, as given the location, I mentioned that I never find myself going to fatheads. The area around HOTD, Upright, Growler Guys and Cascade is just so chalk full off great places, it's hard for me to justify heading over that way. That's without even considering places like Belmont Station, the Horse Brass, Beer Mongers, and the Apex, all over there on the East Side.

I live in Eugene, and while I have a condo in S. Portland (West Linn), I usually just come up for a long weekend. Invariably... even after all this time, there just is never enough time to hit all the places I want to visit.

Thanks, yea I mean I've heard of them from the Midwest and their IPA's are solid it seems. Quick question about Barley Browns, its like 300 miles from Portland.... is it pretty easy to find their stuff on tap in the city?

It's generally very easy to find certain BB beers. Pallet Jack seems to be everywhere, and you see WFO and handtruck a lot as well. The DIPA's are much more difficult to find (tank slapper, head shake, forklift, etc), but with a bit off effort, you should be able to find them somewhere. There are a lot of multi-tap handle places in town, so between the Horse Brass, Apex, Belmont Station, Growler Guys, tin bucket, Bailey's, etc., you should be able to track them down.

My understanding is 10 Barrel's invite only soft opening is this Friday. I would assume they will be fully open right after that.
While I also agree FatHead's is not a must-stop, if the Ransom Old Tom Gin Barreled Head Hunter is still on, and you love IPAs, then that is reason enough to stop by (especially if you are already staying downtown).

Beermongers, Commons and Growler Guys have all been receptive to bottle shares. As always pre-arrange this though. No one wants to host a bottle share the same night they have planned some special tapping or event. Or on a busy Friday or Saturday night for that matter. If you do get the go-ahead and post it on BA, people will show up and bring good stuff. It won't matter what day of the week or time or location. Plan it and people will be there.

Regarding March Madness, be advised that Portland is not as into sports as most other places. Most beer spots do not have TVs! This goes for Apex, Commons, HotD, Baileys, Upright, Belmont Station, Horse Brass. Games will be on at Beermongers, Cascade, FatHeads, Tin Bucket. And none of those are likely to have sound or make anything resembling an event about it.

While hardly a sports bar destination, horse brass does have a couple of TV's, and I suspect they'll show some of the games. I wouldn't go there to watch a sporting event (other than soccer). Personally, I go there for the beer and the ambiance, and if they happen to be showing something on the tele that I happen to want to watch, so much the better.

IBUsive should be on again next week at Fat Head's so between that, Head Hunter, Head Shrinker, Gin Barrel Aged Head Hunter, etc.,...I would definitely make a point to stop by.

Agree on the stopping by Fat Heads. You should do it just to drink their beer.

You probably will think the malt profiles of most the IPAs up here aren't bitter enough (if you prefer san diego IPAs). Fat Heads has a bitterness level that is more on par with what you are used to.

Yea I will be interested to see how they compare! Any breweries have single hop or nelson as the main hop IPA's? (hint Alpine Nelson is hands down my fav SD IPA)
