hi all, Wife has some business in Portland the first weekend of May, and I'll be tagging along. Just wanted to see if any locals had any suggestions on places to hit up (other than breweries) or affordable places to stay? I'm looking to get to Allagash, Bissel, Austin st etc one day and definitely Oxbow another. We are flying in and won't have a car, but hoping to uber where I need to. The wife is pregnant so I'm trying to find some good food/sightseeing options as well. Any local secrets? Thanks in advance!
This thread has lots of good Portland tips. Enjoy, Portland is a great city. http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/beercation-to-maine-vs-vermont.404342/
Affordable places to stay can be a bit tough in Portland since hotels are somewhat limited. There is a huge difference between prices in the summer tourist season and the off season. May might be right on that borderline. Last time I was there (Oct) we stayed at the Courtyard waterfront/ downtown and it wasn't incredibly expensive. I might take a look Air BnB as an alternative. Tons of good food in Portland, way out of proportion to the population. Do a little online research, plenty of top 10 lists to guide you. I recommend Fore Street and Central Provisions. And of course Duckfat.
second Duckfat, will also recommend Benkay Sushi and Eventide. Had a killer rabbit pot pie at the King's Head Pub. Take a walk up the hill on Congress and hook a left on Washington, the Oxbow barrel and blending house will be on your right just behind the meadery.
Allagash Austin Street Bissell Brothers Foundation Gearys New England Distillery ...are all within walking distance to one another. Perfect way to save on an uber trip. Bunker Rising Tide Oxbow Liquid Riot Bier Cellar, Friendly's Beverage & RSVP (Craft Stores) ...are all spread out in Portland but worth going. Search ahead for when these breweries open up in the day! Hope this helped!
sorry to high jack the thread. I just booked a weekend in Portland for April 22-14, so this all has been very helpful. What are the releases like at foundation for Epiphany? Can I grab my cans at Bissell and then just head there for cans or will they be sold out by time i'm done at Bissell?
Go to Foundation's Twitter to find out about their releases. The same can be said for Bissell on their website! As far as availability goes throughout the day: Bissell will sell out before Foundation. Bissell gets cleaned out before 3pm on a Saturday. Foundation will have cans/bottles available until the end of the day.
Thanks for the info, this is very helpful! Im currently following both on Twitter just wasnt sure if Foundation would be sold out by time I was done at Bissell. Looks as if Ill be OK getting to Bissell first then popping into Foundation for cans.
