Possible Bad Trader: @Ozymandius

    Hello all. I started discussions on 8/30/15 with @Ozymandius for a trade. I've traded before, but never on Beer Advocate. He has a zero feedback rating as well. He was looking for 6 Cigar City Jai Alai and 6 Cigar City Invasion, easy for me to get as it is local. In return he was going to send me 2 Odell IPa, 4 Odell mercenary, 3 Deschutes obsidian, and 3 Deschutes fresh squeezed.

    We exchanged messages on Beer Advocate through our inboxes, exchanged phone numbers for texting, and initiated a trade on Beer Advocate. We agreed to ship on 9/1/15. I shipped mine out on 8/31/15, gave him a UPS tracking number and texted a picture to him of the beer. He reciprocated with shipping on 9/1/15 and sent me a UPS tracking number as well as a picture of the beer he was shipping.

    Beers were to arrive to each of us on 9/9/15. My shipment got to him fine. He had damage to the package he shipped according to UPS, and the box was returned to him. He received the damaged package on 9/17/15. He texted me, told me two bottles were broken and said he would replace them and ship them out the next day.

    That was the last I heard from him. I texted him on 9/23/15 and 9/24/15 asking if he every got a chance to ship the beer to me. I sent him a message on Beer Advocate through our inboxes on 9/25/15 asking the same. And I called him yesterday, 9/28/15, and left a voicemail asking about the beer. I've heard nothing from him since 9/17/15.

    I see he was on Beer Advocate on 9/19/15, but not since. So, what should I do?

    Seems he got what he wanted by creating an account: to make a trade, scam and leave.

    Hopefully he comes back and makes ends meet.

    If @gregoryhengeldc received a tracking number as he said, I do not think he was trying to scam someone. He probably gave up because he didnt want to pay for shipping again and making it right.

    I did have a tracking number, and all was good until it got to the destination facility. It was apparently damaged there and returned. Also, he told me he got insurance on the package, and the claim went through. If that is the case, I don't understand why he didn't ship again.

    If he indeed didn't intend to ship, why would he tell me about receiving the package back and then tell me he would replace the broken bottles and ship out the next day?

    Should I wait longer, or is it time to leave negative trading feedback?

    You have heard nothing from him in 10 days despite trying to reach him 3 or 4 times? Your call, but I would probably cut my losses and leave negative feedback at this stage. If he hasn't been on in over 10 days and hasn't responded to 4 attempts to reach out, then I would guess he has probably abandoned the account.

    @blue-dream are the mods able to check IP addresses to see if someone has created a new account and abandoned an old one?

    You can leave him negative feedback, if he comes through you can adjust the feedback if needed.

    Well, I left him negative feedback. Maybe I'll hear something, probably not though.

    Sucks this was my first trade experience on BA.

    I'll let you all know if anything else transpires. Thanks for the help.

    Not believing that one. I've seen a good number of creative ways people go around to scam in trades. A trade is not good until the beer is in your hands.

    Sorry to hear about your experience, OP. Hopefully the trader comes through. Only thing I can suggest is to stick with traders with established history in the near term and then once your history is built up you can then request any less experienced traders to ship first. Obviously it's no help to you now nor is it a guarantee in itself. Good luck to you with future trades.

    And if you ever find yourself wanting Michigan shelf beers, OP, don't hesitate to reach out. I'd be happy to help a new trader get more established.

    @blue-dream it appears @Ozymandius has chosen to abandon his acct rather than fulfill his commitment to the OP.

    How easily can he creep in the backdoor with another ID sometime in the future? He has nothing to lose with this ID but his self respect but that's apparently non-existent.

    Well as of now, he still only has the 1 account. But if he does in the future make another account he will be found out the first time a mod IP checks him. Not looking good here.

    A little late to this, but between having traded before and the shipment was sent, easy to get beers at that, but damaged, my first inclination would be making sure that he is OK. He hasn't been on, read his message, or responded to calls and text, I'd still give to the possibility that something happened to him. See if he's on Facebook and other social media venues and if you can reach out to people who know him on there. Negative feedback, which can be adjusted later, is still warranted, just in case he tries to trade again in the mean time.

    Just checking in to let everyone know nothing has changed. Appreciate the support. This hasn't turned me away from trading here, so no worries there. Still believe the vast majority of people here are good people. Better luck next time I guess.

    @mythaeus his acct was opened July 15 2015, shows 3 posts & only 1 trade, which is with the op & has negative fb. I hope that he's all right but I suspect he decided to dump this acct. It's new, with little to no history & essentially nothing to lose.

    It's amazing how often trades go bad which involve inexpensive beers that are really available. Hell, we've seen it even with members who have been active several years & have numerous successful trades. *shrug*Just the vagaries of the human condition, I guess.
