I have a gas griddle outside, and I was curious as to whether or not any of you has ever tried to homebrew on top of one of those instead of a hot plate or stove.

One way you can find out is to fill a kettle with water and see if you can boil it. I would be surprised if anyone here has tried making beer on a gas griddle.

My brother in law has a gas grill with one of those side burners. He brews off of that. Works just fine for him. As long as you can get a good boil going with the volume you're wanting to brew, no reason you can't.

Probably not enough BTUs running through it to get the job done. A standard gas grill line runs 1-2 PSI. A turkey fryer starts at 10 PSI. In my eyes, a turkey fryer is entry level. If you want to go electric, you'll want to divvy up the wort into multiple pots and burners to raise temperatures. A large element on a stove is usually enough to maintain a soft boil for about 6 gal of wort.

Even if the batch size less than 5G?

Not to single you out my friend ... but there's too often an unconscious bias in this forum which only sees questions through a 5G lens.

A pretty good lens in my book...even though I am doing more 10 gal batches now...5 gal is kind of the standard for homebrewers and anything else can be extrapolated from it...5 x2 = 10... 5 /5 = 1 ...oh...and cornies are 5 gal : )

I see your point, though when it comes to burners.

How many people are adverse to home brewing b/c 5G is "... kind of the standard...?"

My guess is more than a few given the popularity of 1G kits.

I boil 3 gallons on my gas grill outside with one of those side burners all the time. I am usually doing corn on the cob, but have used it for the boil-down of first runnings for a wee heavy and have also done extract kits with 3 gallons boil volume.

Depending on the specific goal and the patience you have for larger volumes, I would say an outdoor gas burner would work just fine.

My guess is not very averse if they are homebrewing...any size batch : ) Cheers

My side burners are 14K BTU. While the 15K BTU burners on my kitchen range are adequate for brewing a 5 gal batch indoors, the inevitable air flow (wind) outside is a non trivial factor. It can be done (I've done it), but t can be a b*tch.

the few times I tried to use the side burner of the grill resulted in a tremendous amount of soot. not pretty, but it could be done.
be sure your grill table can hold the weight.

a Cajun cooker can be bought fairly cheap though and is much more better.
    Cheers.
