Any other BAs running? Will be my first marathon and obviously first time running Boston. For anyone that has run a marathon, Boston or otherwise, how soon after the race do you grab a beer? Preferred styles? Thinking gose for the salt to restore my sodium level, but I'll probably just grab the first IPA I see.

What I want to know is how does a first time marathoner get into Boston?
    Good Luck!
I grabbed a beer as soon as I got to the bar that was about a mile from the finish after my only marathon.
That mile walk took about 45 minutes lol.

Guessing you're running on a charity number? Best of luck to you, and may there always be a tailwind. I'm nowhere near marathon level, maybe a 5k here and there. I was at the Publick House a few years ago on Marathon Monday, they were tapping something, I think, and there were a whole lot of people with finisher's medals on. I can think of a whole lot worse places to go for a celebratory brew or two.

I received an invitational entry through my office. I'm the guy that didn't qualify and didn't raise thousands of dollars for charity.

And I expect to be walking gingerly as well, or at a minimum still standing. Just need a bar I can lean against, don't think sitting will be a great move.

I will be there. I can tell you that Boston is the absolute best marathon in the world. There is nothing like it. I usually have a beer within an hour or 2 of finishing, but that's a matter of circumstance of getting back to where I am staying, etc. If I could, I'd drink a beer as soon as I finished. No style preference. Any beer tastes amazing after that race. Enjoy brother!

Best beer I ever had was a Yuengling around mile 23 of the Steamtown marathon.

As for when to have been, just listen to your body. At Chicago they give away Goose Island at the finish line, and I knew I didn't want anything to do with it. Others around that drank it had a hard time keeping it down, and I was happy I stayed away. But by the time I got back to my hotel room and showered I was ready for the Ninja v. Unicorn I had in my fridge. The beer will all taste amazing, so enjoy.

And you're a lucky bastard. I had to raise $1500 bucks for Chicago, which I thought was a pain in the ass. The same charity wanted $10,000 for Boston.

As long as it is a session beer, right away. It will go down like water. Usually there is free beer once you finished.

When I ran Lehigh Valley they had a Travellers truck doling out their pumpkin beer. I took one sip and wanted to thorw up. After Cliff Shot Blocks and 4 Gu Packs.... only water does the trick. That said.... Running an Ironman 70.3 in Syracuse come June. I am debating whether I should go with the Westy 12 or RR Salvation '12 I have in the cellar.

^^^ Free beer? Not in Boston. My " marathon" involves taking photos all day, like 8 hours. Shooting 2-3,000 pics and carrying 2 cameras and 4 lenses, plus gear. And the finish line fans and crowds are awesome in Boston, the best. Notch saison for me when my work is done.

I run every week, but never considered a marathon yet.

    Maybe I should.

Sam 26.2 is a great beer and brewed specifically for the marathon.

Not comparing a 5K fun run to a marathon, but I used to run the St Patricks Day 5K every year in MS, and there was always kegs of green Bud Light at the finish

I second the gose idea, I'm planning on chugging some Otra Vez when I finish mine later this month. How long do I wait before I commence drinking? In a perfect world I'd be popping the cap as I crossed the finish line.

For me it was something from Sierra Nevada after my 5 marathon finishes. Pale Ale or Torpedo...Enjoy your favorite style of beer and take in what you have accomplished! Good luck in Boston! I ran Boston 3 times. Pace yourself and don't get too excited at the start and try to keep up with the fast pace. Once you get over heartbreak hill it is all down hill with hopefully the wind at your back!

If you've never done a marathon, you may not feel like a beer for a little bit after.
But really, GL and probably a nice session would do it.

A Gose is a solid beer to go with, the salt for obvious reasons and it is quite refreshing. although I have been known to go ahead with a BA Stout from time to time. Id probably stay away from anything sour that has a high acid content tends to cause heartburn even more frequently than usual.

Yeah, it's kinda funny how Boston nickel and dimes its runners. Even the post-marathon fest at Fenway, which o think Sam sponsors, no longer does free beer. You get a t shirt and a medal, and refreshments on the course. But my entry fee was $350 for that. Let alone the charity runners that raise thousands of dollars and all the merch sales.

This - I would suggest chocolate milk and a ton of water. Let that settle and see if you feel like a beer.
