Nothing to add except Good Luck, OP. Good Luck to any other BAs running this year. Good Luck to Adrianne Haslet as well. Cheers.

I went from 5k endurance to marathon in 3 months. Or at least I hope I have the endurance for it. And I drank beer pretty much every night like normal. The time commitment was the biggest issue. 3 hour runs on a Saturday kinda ruin the day.

Maybe of topic here but i dont run, i train for strongman. And after a big day where ill do nothing but eat and workout 6-7 times, my favorite beers is something light like a hoppy pils or helles, even a Keystone lately. Not a running marathon but im just trying to relate because i dont run.

    Good luck to you.

I've ran 3 marathons, and after each one I've crushed a sixer of Paulaner Oktoberfest in my Paulaner 1.5 Liter mug. It's just a tradition for me. After the sixer is gone, I continue drinking other beers until I pass out, because I also always take the Monday after my marathon off. Drink what YOU want.

Marathon is all endurance and state of mind. I imagine strongman training isn't that much different. Working different muscles in short bursts instead, but the toll on the body and mind is significant. Maybe I'll head to Jacob Wirth for a German pils or an urquell.

Sounds like a Gose sort of day . Salt, a bit sour ( like all the vomit that would have come up if I ran a marathon) , and low alcohol. Perfect! I'll be sticking with my 5-10ks and mountain biking.

Don't worry about it now. After some marathons I've went straight for the beer tent and enjoyed. I remember the GI at the finish line of the Chicago Marathon was fabulous - which was a different feeling from a prior poster. However, after others my body revolted and a beer was the last thing I wanted. The great thing is you are in Boston, which has a lot of choices. Just wait until you finish and then decide based on what feels right.

I always like something heavy (BA stout) after a big day of exercise. I guess I feel like I earn the big beers on those big days!

I agree with OP that soon after the race, a good, salty gose would help restore whats needed and also be refreshing...

Also, if anyone is cheering along the route, my bib number is 28428. I'll be wearing a beer inspired shirt.

No marathons for me. Longest run: 14~ish miles (I don't keep exact track, as I don't want to be a data hog like some of my teammates). That said, I find a SN Pale Ale or Five Hop absolutely sublime after a run. Especially a hot, steamy run, as is tradition here in Missouri.

I usually make absolute certain to stretch through my routine (45 seconds in each pose) before moving onto food or beer. Getting the muscles back to loose or at least not as tight means more in the long term than getting that beer in, but if I have a beer nearby, I'll consume right after stretching/cool-down (~30 minutes).

Good luck! I'll be cheering from Texas. Your first marathon will be an amazing experience! I'll echo stretching as long as you can stand after race - it will make the next day much more tolerable. On my long runs and after my marathons, I always took an ice bath (20 minutes or so) post-run. Even if it's awhile after the run, it will speed up your recovery time exponentially.

It's all about sodium levels. To my knowledge nobody has died in a marathon from dehydration but literally dozens have died through drinking too much water.
    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/lifestyl...rinking-can-be-deadlier-than-dehydration.html

    I quote "
according to many medical experts, thousands of runners could be risking their health if not their lives by drinking too much rather than too little.

Timothy Noakes, professor of exercise and sports science at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, who has spent the last 30 years researching the topic, says that the dangers of dehydration during endurance exercise have been exaggerated, with the result that cases of EAH are on the rise. He says runners need to be warned that overconsumption of fluids (whether water or sports drinks) before, during, or after exercise can have a potentially fatal outcome."

I've never done a marathon before, but a gose, pilsner, or IPA would sound sublime after a long run. Good luck to you on the Boston Marathon!

Have fun running Boston. It's an epic event to partake in. Be sure to kiss a few Wellesley girls at mile 13. You'll hear them well before you see them. Seeing the Citgo sign always picks up your spirits as it sits at one mile to go. Turning left onto Boylston street will fill you with a ton of emotions. It's going to be a warmer day, so try to stay hydrated(drink to thirst). Do what worked for you during your training. Hopefully you work someplace that has elevators, because stairs(especially going down stairs) will be your nemesis for several days after the marathon. Enjoy the experience! Reply back here after and let us know how you did.

Okay this is NOWHERE near a marathon, so congrats on that! I did my first 5k last year (Which i thought was feat) but anyway, this specific 5K was sponsored by Sly Fox, so at the end there was a festival of food trucks, a free beer, etc. Anyway, the free beer they were giving the runners was a Grissette, and that was overwhelmingly refreshing..(although maybe anything would have been at that point). Perhaps a belgian style?

Congrats on your first marathon! I'm actually training for one too. Not my first, but my first in over 10 years.

Honestly, I don't think I'd grab a beer immediately after the race. You'll probably want to push water through you for at least an hour and get a little food in you (I always did). I don't usually get that hankering for a beer until a couple hours after finishing. Then, it's IPA-city baby!
