Hi, the story is that we bought this house that had this 12'x8' room in the basement and my first thought was that it would be perfect for a sealed-up wine cellar. I was going for functionality, not looks.

So I hired the right handy man to do the following:
    1) Add an extra layer of drywall on all four-sides of the room leaving 4-5 inches between the drywall sheets.
    2) Drop a drywall ceiling above the room; working around the various HVAC pieces above
    3) Put a vapor barrier up in the area between the two layers of drywall
    4) Then fill up the drywall area with insulation until it's packed full
    5) Fill up 100% of the area above the ceiling with more insulation
    6) Finally, build a door using two pieces of plywood with insulation sheeting in-between. A door knob wont work as it's too thick so you need to put handles on it, etc.

I added a rubber-mat floor that locks together. And sealed it all up with a water-vapor resistant paint base & heavy duty caulk.

The handy-man did all of the hard stuff and I got it done for around $1.5k for him plus $2k for the kick-butt CellarPro unit. There are others out there, but CP has the best ones going with a great warranty.

Thanks ttango. That's a lot of great information. I've been dying to do this and my beer/wine stash could use the growing space! Maybe now it'll happen!
    Cheers

Its been a while since I've posted a pic, the bottom shelf is beer I need to get around to drinking ASAP. I try not to sit on stuff for more than a year or so, unless they're known to age well (Cantillon, Fantome, 3F)

Regular trips to/trade partner in St. Louis? I just don't see too many people with 2nd Shift and 4 Hands in their cellar pics. Those are all awesome beers though!

I'm one of the lucky few who has a really good trading partner in STL. Sends me pretty much everything from Side Project/Perennial/4 Hands/2nd Shift. All really good stuff, you guys are very lucky!

Yeah, with all of the Perennial/Side Project craziness, sometimes I feel like 4 Hands and 2nd Shift are overshadowed and don't quite get the love they deserve. Both of them are putting out some amazing stuff too.

I recently purchased a house with a 1,400 bottle wine cellar. It has about 12 bottles of wine in it! Not great shots, but the only issue is that there is very limited space for vertical bottle storage. Need to clean up some boxes and build more vertical shelving. Lots of room for loons though! Since last December, the temps have stayed between 52 - 65 degrees year round, as the prior owner insulated it well.
