http://www.foodrepublic.com/2015/03/26/bartenders-take-backseat-self-service-beer-bars-wh Good idea? Bad idea? Or just weird? I wouldn't much like an actual bar that was all automated like this, but would probably appreciate something like this in a hotel lobby or concert venue, etc. – places where I'm not really there for the alcohol.
I've been to Barrel Republic and they have a pretty good selection from time to time. It's an innovative idea that you can serve yourself. Definitely a new experience. For me, I would rather still sit at a bar, talk with the bartender (sometimes shooting the breeze) and socialize amongst those sitting around me. I guess I'm old-fashioned, being at 37 and still trying to get deeper into craft beer scene.
I've seen and heard of the advantages and then the disadvantages of it. I don't want my bar to be like a self serve froyo place. If I want to pour my own beer, I'll either head to my place or one of my buddies who also have kegerators. Great idea, just depends on if it's executed well.
Just thinking about how good bartender's are quick to pour off a bit of beer to get the head proper for the customer if need be and vice-versa and how that won't happen with these.
