Disappointed would-be customers of Pracna on Main found the historic Minneapolis restaurant closed Tuesday, perhaps for good.
No announcement of a closing was found on the restaurant’s web page, Facebook page, or Twitter feed because those had all shut down, as well.
The restaurant was founded in 1890 on the cobblestone street that faces the Falls of St. Anthony, Minneapolis’ birthplace.
Many customers have admired the view of the Mississippi River and the Minneapolis skyline behind it from the summer patio at Pracna on Main. The restaurant was Exhibit A when USA Today named Main Street one of the prettiest cobblestone streets in America last fall.
St. Anthony was a separate city until it was absorbed by Minneapolis in 1872. Its riverfront business district became the basis of the dining and entertainment complex St. Anthony Main, which was founded in the 1980s.
The sudden closing of Pracna on Main would be a contrast to the long advance notice provided by owners of Nye’s Polonaise Room, another landmark bar and restaurant in the neighborhood that will close later this year.
According to the Minneapolis Eater website, Pracna owners were offering guests free cider Monday night in what may have been a farewell toast.

Did they ever decide to serve Surly beer there after that whole fiasco a few years ago?

Awww that sucks! I loved Pracna. Get Mitten-fisted was an awesome event along with all their other tap takeovers. Very sad to hear...

That's terrible. Only made it there once, a few years ago for a Goose Island sour event, but it seemed like a historic restaurant.

I'm sorry to hear about this. It's a great location and a nice old place, so maybe someone (new owners) can do something with it. The group that owned and managed it until now had had it for a long time -along with a handful of other restaurants- but it had fallen off the local radar a while ago. And judging by the online reviews written in the past eight years or so, it had not met the expectations of today's go-go clientele.
As much as I needle Surly in private (just ask either of my two friends!), that decision on the behalf of their management can't be understated; Surly is the most galvanizing force in Minnesota food and beverage in the past ten years.

Bummer. When we moved here in the last 80s that whole area was so nice (Riverplace and St Anthony Main). Just full of unique stores. Sad what it has become.

After Pracna decided to make some kind of "statement" and removed Surly from their taps in 2011, we made a "statement" and said we'd never go there again.

Sad news. Great place with a pretty awesome cellar. They always brought out some interesting bottles whenever they did a tap takeover.

I was just there a week or two ago. We stopped and had one beer before going to see that movie that uses characters from The Hobbit book. Looked like a great selection of beers and I'd planned to stop back sometime because I saw they had a bottle of Vikre Aquavit (I don't only drink beer). I guess I'll have to find it elsewhere now.

Literally ate there last Friday with three friends. Good tap list and good food. Place was full - can't believe they weren't making money. Owners should have tried to sell it as is.....

Loved this place. Nothing better than hanging out on the patio on a nice summer day. Good Beer list, good food and great location......will admit though, I never go down there in the winter months. I wonder if that is what is hurting these places that don't have excellent parking options (Nye's).

Have to believe the moviegoers would keep steady business for them during the winter.

This is some unfortunate news. I really enjoyed Pracna the few times I'd been there. They definitely had nice things come out of their cellar ever so often. Plus I thought they made some decent eats.

I guess I was unaware of their issue with Surly. The fact that I couldn't enjoy Surly there wouldn't bother me at all.

Right, because there's so few places in town to find Surly  Sad to see it go and really hope it does re-open in the spring. Have only been a couple times, but each time the food was good and the beer list was solid.

Someone from CBS in Minnesota Tweeted tonight that they have an upcoming story about a re-opening at Pracna. I'd be bummed if they were going away or changing too much.

Sounds like the building owner has a bunch of repairs and updates to do. Maybe they closed to get those done, and plan to reopen in spring, possibly with different owners.

I've heard that the owners of the Aster Cafe are going to take it over and reopen in the Spring after said repairs are complete.

I would like that. Aster has always been too cramped. Decent food, good beer, live music, etc.

Their Twitter account is back up, but under Tuggers Tavern? And they tweeted free mini corn dogs. I might drive by later to see if they reopened...
