The family + son's girlfriend making the BIG trip to Prague and Budapest. I'd hate to go that far and miss out on any special beers in these historic cities. Ideas appreciated!

I never know with these posts whether somebody just wants to look at lots of shiny stainless steel or they are just looking for a good beer

    Can't speak to Budapest.

    From my website www.BeerGuidePRG.com

Lots of good pubs with a variety of beer if you are restricting your self to looking at brewery kit that is probably just like every other piece of brewery kit you've seen

Loosely "Brewpubs" meaning beer is mostly found here (but can sometimes be found at multi tap pubs)

    Andělský pivovar

    Na Perštýne 344/5, Prague 100 01

    U Tří Růží
    Husova 232/10, Prague 110 00

    Vinohradský Pivovar
    Korunní 2506/106, Prague 101 00

    By no means complete.

For "tap rooms" (other than Trilobit) these are mostly pubs or restaurants that specialize in a single brewery's beer.

    Hostomická Nalévárna (Hostomice)
    Soukenická 1192/17, Prague 110 00

Pivárna U Klauna (Crazy Clown of Brno)
    Pod Harfou 68, Prague 190 00

    Pivnice Trilobit
    Francouzská 400/112 , Prague 101 00

    Trilobit Pivni Bar
    Plzeňská 1125/160, Prague 150 00

Žižkov na Žižkově (Pivovar Moravský Žižkov)
    Chelčického 1153/14, Prague 130 00

Again, by no means complete. If I see a brewery sign over a pub I don't recognize, I'll often go in just to try it. Never had a bad one (though some were not too interesting). You didn't mention a time frame -- one could spend a month and not be bored, beer-wise.

Also, are you looking for the classic czech lager, or more 'modern styles' (i.e. american crafty type stuff)? As Prague has a lot of both these days.

Also a lot of great 'newer' breweries doing awesome versions of the classic czech lager.

One I recently found that I highly recommend is Pivovar Lajka. The 10 degree and 12 degree lagers are incredible. Located on the border of Bubenec and Letna near the art school.

In addition to the awesome list above, I would add St. Norbert Strahov Monastic Brewery near the castle.

    Have a good time!

    Oops <face palm> I also forgot:

    Břevnovský Klášterní Šenk
    Markétská 28/1, Prague 169 01

I agree with you on Lajka -- the are brand new (last year or so) and have hit the ground running.

I just came from Prague. Not much in terms of breweries. I bit the bullet and went to Staropramen. They take euro and czech koruna. Only 4 beers on tap but all were tasty via sampler. Service and food was stellar. Also, checked out Brevnov Monastery Brewery St. Aldaberts which was disappointing. The brewery itself is open 10-17:00 but only for tours and bottle pick up. If you want there beer on tap, theres a restaurant on site that serves only 3 of the breweries offerings from starting at 14:00. Food was pretty tasty. There was a couple good pubs: U Zaludu and Bar U Mateje.

Im just back myself and can report that the pilsner in The Golden Tiger is still superb and only 49ck a pop. Also enjoyed some brilliant stuff in Pardibuce at 30 to 38ck a go. On our train they had Budvar on tap at 35ck a pop and for it being on a train it too was in great condition!

I'll be in Prague in two weeks.

Do you suggest any places near the old town that offer craft like local beer styles (similar in approach to American craft brewers but not American styles)?

My guess is that you would enjoy the Prague Beer Museum which despite the name is just a beer bar/restaurant. They have 30 beers on tap and two locations.

If there is a single "special" beer, just one that you don't want to miss out on, I'd go with the one dark beer from U Fleků. The beer is great but so is the experience. Plan to eat. Relax and have a good time. There are so many more but nothing matches it in my experience.

I spent a few days last august in Prague, here is the list of the really cool spots I went to. Each of them proposed mostly Czech craft beers, I rank them below from best to « less » best :

    Craft Beer Spot
    Plaská 623/5, 150 00 Malá Strana

    U Kunstatu
    Řetězová 222 3, 110 00 Staré Město

    Art&food had
    Plaská 617/4, 150 00 Malá Strana,

    Zubaty Pes
    Slezská 1357/1, 120 00 Vinohrady

Spent four days in the city, I went to craft beer spot 2 times, several hours each time. They have a huge selection of bottles with smooth prices (if you’re into lambics and sour beers, I recommend Resurrection 2016 by Wild creatures, à grape lambic-inspired beer).

    cheers

I enjoyed my visit to the Craft Beer Spot a couple of months ago. I wrote about it:

“A craft beer bar which we went to once was the Craft Beer Spot:

    https://praguebeerspot.com/

This place had a modest amount of beers on tap (10) but between me, Kathleen and my buddy Phil we very much enjoyed all of the beers we had there. We were there at Happy Hour time (about 5:00) but Happy Hour does not appear to be a ‘thing’ in Prague so it was quite slow then. This worked in our favor since the beer manager (he orders the beers which are served there) was able to chat with us for a considerable period of time. His name is Travis and he is originally from Idaho; he actually brewed for a craft brewery in Idaho for some period of time. Travis has been in Prague for the last 8 years. We had a wide ranging conversation but one topic was hoppy beers brewed in the Czech Republic. He stated that he was a BIG fan of the hoppy beers brewed by the Černý Potoka brewery. He had their beer of Blitzkrieg (characterized as a West Coast IPA) on tap (if you click the above link you will see it is still on tap). Kathleen ordered two glasses of this beer (I took a couple of sips) and that beer was very good. Travis stated that the hoppy beers of Černý Potoka are the ‘best’ since the brewer has hop contracts (US hop vendor) and is able to brew with fresh hops. Travis intimated that the other breweries are using ‘old’ hops available on the European spot market for hops. I am uncertain whether I fully agree with Travis here since the other hoppy beers that Kathleen ordered from other breweries were also very good.”

    Cheers!
