In Austin TX for the weekend and am looking for a 3L bottle from prairie ales. I found one I Colorado last week but kinda need one more for a large format party we are going to do. Can someone point me in the right direction?
Never seen any in Texas. The 2nd Anniversary 3Ls hit a few places in Denver around GABF, I'd imagine that's what you found, right?
Yeh that's what I found BUT I saw a shit ton of empty ones at whip in so I assumed they got them here.
There are no 3L bottles by Prairie that are legal to sell in TX currently. The largest format bottles that I have seen around are a 6L bottle of La Fin du Monde and a 3L bottle of Double Bastard. Both were on the shelf at WhichCraft last night.
I saw a 3L Chimay at Total Wine today for $109. I don't get that pricing when a 750 is 13.99. Unless I'm missing something, that's 3L for $56. Is the big bottle worth double the price?
If the first thing you think of when you look at the price tag on a large format is this analysis, no; if the first thing you think of is your New Year's Eve party in 5 years, yes.
I dont know if its "worth it" but my understanding is that the glass is actually very expensive on those large bottles, and that makes up a big part of the price.
There's another 6L La Fin du Monde at Central Market North Lamar for $240. There's also a 3L Piraat ($100?) that's been sitting on the shelf at Spec's Airport for about a year. Even though the $/oz comparisons to their normal sizes are very unfavorable on both beers, big format bottles are really cool...
I suppose that would make sense. There has to be some reason why it would be that much more expensive per ounce.
Just saw a 3L of Evil Twin Bozo Beer in KC going to $210ish. 3L of a 17% stout sounds like a hell of a party
