You do realize I was being sarcastic? Well truth be known, I prefer Enjoy By over a can of Topper.

Not sure I believe this, but that being said the same people claim to taste "chocolate mango pine cloves and cardamon" in a beer.

Exactly. Their reactions may have been more because of what they were told (that's it's a great craft lager) than because of the taste.

That said, there is a "social desirability bias" likely at play here. The group members may have been heaping praise on the beer because the OP gave the impression that he liked it and was sharing a bunch of it with them. In other words, they may not have actually liked it, but were saying they did for other reasons.

Social desirability bias will cripple any research very quickly.

Either way, this is a funny thing to do and it gave me a chuckle.

I don't disagree w your comment, but think its circumstantial. This works for beers you've never tried, but if you're blind tasting a few you have, sometimes the appearance is a dead giveaway. If Heady is mixed w two other DIPAs, I'll know which one it is just by looks. I agree that appearances can be important, but certainly not equal to smell or taste in my opinion.

SA is good beer that is often maligned. This blind tasting prank makes sense. In fact it makes enough sense that it is one of SA's most recent marketing campaign.

Unlike the OP, I actually believe this one would fool people. If you have ever had a bud light, you would instantly recognize the deception. Bud light has a very distinct taste. I promise you on the first sip many people would comment that it tastes like bud light.

OTOH I am willing to bet that the tasting the OP described never happened. As I also doubt his claim to have done several pliney/ht + widely distributed IPA tasting, and have ht loose every time.

Would never give their names away, nor would I directly point out this thread to them. If one happens to come across it, he's free to state why he thought BL was good.

I did something similar a few years ago with a blind tasting of various wheat beers. We had homebrewed wheat ales mixed in with a number of commercially available wheat beers and, for fun, I snuck in a can of Bud Light w/o telling any of the participants. It was hilarious hearing the judges reactions to the BL that they were unknowingly drinking. "Uh. This one is aweful." "I can't even taste it." Needless to say, it finished dead last in the "competition" by a large margin. Preconcieved bias confirmed.

Unmalted grains aren't so much of a problem unless they happen to be something other than grains traditionally used in beer brewing. While I don't mind liquor being distilled from corn or rice beer, their presence is beer is highly noticeable given that corn syrup contains compounds other than simple, fermentable monosaccharides. Also, they really wind up detracting from the beer's flavor when used to replace malted barley, since malted barley contains many non-fermentable disaccharides and polysaccharides that contribute to the beer's flavor (whereas corn syrup does not).

As for denying this thread's authenticity, you're perfectly welcome to do so. I certainly won't lose sleep over it. Many snobs probably think the same thing but would also be fooled into liking BL.

    Thanks.

All I'll say in response to this thread is that there's a stark difference between pranking (or intending to prank, depending) a craft beer snob and a craft beer geek, which I believe OP's story hits exactly.
