The failure of so many BAs to recognize Anchor Brewing's quality is more astounding to me than the OP's friends' failure to recognize Bud Light in a blind tasting.

I feel bad for invoking the "if it wasn't for Anchor, the American craft scene wouldn't be the same today" line, but it's true, in my opinion. They were the first "craft brewery" in America, and they're still cranking out delicious stuff. They don't make the typical Double IPA or BA stout heavy hitters, they make stuff that is infinitely drinkable, and infinitely tasty, the sort of stuff that continues to taste good no matter how many times you have it in a night. I simply don't understand how somebody could have Anchor Steam and not like it, but I guess taste is subjective.

    Not trying to be mean.

I have no problem with the original ruse and think the outcome is very interesting. I don't really drink pale lagers though and even if I did I would not confuse Bud Light with a craft lager. Which is not to say that I'm above drinking Bud Light if the circumstances are right.

Doubt it exists anymore. It may have been before the "servers crashed"

This was something that pissed me off to no end in the homebrew club I used to attend... we would be passing around a bottle of poorly attenuated, sour or vegetal or medicinal crap, and no one would tell the homebrewer he sucked. I guess it's the American Idol syndrome...

people didn't want to offend you, because you supposedly put your heart into the swill they were tasting. So they were trying to be encouraging, but instead were completely worthless as constructive criticism. It's why most homebrewers think they make the best beer in the world. They can't taste their own flaws because of bias, and no one is honest enough to tell them their brews are awful.

There's a forum thread going over here that is staying on top of the new Alchemist brewery developments... Check it out! http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/official-the-alchemists-second-brewery-thread.188553/
And you're right: the new place will be brewing all of their other styles while the Waterbury cannery remains dedicated to the almighty Heady Topper. They'll be bringing the HT up in their box truck for retail sale at the Stowe facility, which will be built specifically to accommodate the flow of visitors and showcase The Alchemist's own special way of doing things. We're the architectural firm on the team that's putting this together. And we like good beer...

I think a better beer prank for beer snobs would be to do the complete opposite of what the OP said. Get a bunch of Hopheads in a room and pour them an "Enjoy By" or a "Pliny" or any other world class IPA and tell them before they take a sip that it's a new IPA put out by Miller, Coors or Bud and see what they say. I am betting the majority give it low to average grades because of the preconceived BMC notion.

A friend of mine did this with a couple of guys and a bottle of Westy 12. He told them it was a homebrew that one of his customers dropped off for him to try. They all said it was pretty decent, but nothing really special. They were all pretty shocked when he told them what they were drinking.

Why is it obvious that we get it really fresh? It's not like it's made in boston

It's massively popular out here, ensuring relatively quick turnover. At least, so I assume.

Although I have no idea where it's actually brewed.
