I've seen pre-filled growlers by Rogue and Olde Burnside on store shelves that are filled at the brewery like any other bottle and go through distro. Those I see as no different as a bomber or what have you but if I'm going to a brew pub or brewery and state laws don't prevent them from freshly filling my growler, than I'm probably not buying one that's prefilled. I know what I'm getting into when I buy a growler. Fresh fill off the tap, no more than a few days in the fridge max before opening and I know that if I don't finish it soon after opening (that day) it will be flat.

I'm surprised you didn't bother to read the third post after his....

op that's lame I would take it back with receipt if you got one and tell your story the the person in charge. if they don't fix or atleast offer some consolation they shouldn get anymore buisness. but you could have checked the date even if they told you it's fresh.

first things first. stop buying hop forward beers that are month old. don't cellar them, age them or do any thing to them other than refrigerate them and promptly consume them. that is all.

I know not to consume old IPAs or any other hop forward brews...that is why I was complaining that it was pre-filled and a month old. I have never cellared any IPAs besides 120 minute and I always consume as quickly as possible. The date on the growler was hidden and they also handed it to me when I was leaving. I am guessing they have had other people complain about this and that is the reason they just, 'throw it on the tab and we'll give it to you when you leave so it won't sit on the bar.' I think the bartender was new and might not have been aware of the problem with pre-filling. I know I would be wary or working at a place where they pre-fill growlers.

    hey Breweries!!!
if you are in a state where they're are no laws banning or limiting the sales of growlers... STOP PRE-FILLING THEM.

    thank you.

Growlers (not bail top) are IMO only good for 5-7 days bail top on the other hand I have let sit for 14 days with no problem, I would not buy one filled personally. I have my own filled and if I want to hang on to it I go bail top

The only pre-filled growlers should be counter-pressure filled growlers, kept cold and held for no more than a week before discarding. Anything else indicates laziness and a lack of respect for the beer, period.

A pre-filled growler is basically a big bottle and thus has to go thru all the labeling requirements of a bottle, including having the warning label on it.

A filled on request growler is considered to be a big glass and has to go thru all the labeling requirements that a pint glass has to go thru...none.

State laws, of course, will vary, but IIRC that is how the TTB looks at it.

the pre-filled bottle did not have a warning label on it...it also only had the plastic seal on it...the carbonation was gone after 4 hours as well even though i recapped it tightly and put it in the fridge.

There are growlers that don't have a surgeon general warning? We use that as defense #1 for stoners who ask if they can use an empty gallon of milk...

Prost in Denver sells pre-filled growlers throughout the area. They have a reverse pressure setup. Original reports claimed they would be good for more than a month, but I've had two that were less than ideal (...and I'm being very nice) that were only a few weeks old. I'm kind of paranoid to get more as a result, even if the beer inside was world class a few weeks earlier.
I think some of the really nice metal growlers out there can hold up better than the typical glass jug variety.

Yes, it is only some states that require the warning, not the Feds, if the growler is filled on demand aka "a big glass".
