Hi all. I did this last year and it was a lot of fun (though no one actually won, ha ha, but don't be discouraged by that). I figured we'd try again this year.

As with last year, we will have a contest where interested parties choose who they think the Super Bowl MVP is going to be. As of right now the 12 teams for the 2015 NFL playoffs have been selected. All 12 of these teams conceivably with a chance to make it to the Super Bowl, and thus any player on any of these 12 squads could conceivably be the Super Bowl MVP.

    Here's how it works:

Chime in here IN THIS THREAD with the name of whomever your pick is, it can be any player on any of the 12 teams. I will pop into this thread occassional to provide an updated list of which BA's have picked which players. It'll be done on a first come, first serve basis. So when I check back in, whomever picked Tom Brady first, will get him. Once I post an updated list in this thread and you're locked in for a player, I will ask that you send me a beer mail with your name, shipping address and five favorite beer styles. PLEASE DECLARE YOUR PLAYER HERE, IN THIS THREAD, SO OTHERS KNOW HE IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE. It's the only way to do it so people know who the remaining options are.

Remember: We are picking the MVP of the Super Bowl, not the season. If a guy has a breakout game in the big game, he wins it! Remember Desmond Howard in 1997 against New England? He was the MVP, not Favre, when Green Bay won it. So while it may seem like the big name player is the best to grab, one also must know that many things are possible. Last year no one won, as no one picked Seattle linebacker Malcolm Smith.

Also, you can't pick "the field" (in other words, someone from the pool of players that isn't picked). The reason for this is that when teams lose and their respective players are out of the playoffs and have no shot at the Super Bowl MVP, I want people that picked those players to still have something to root for! If the MVP isn't a player that was chosen, we all win, because no one has to ship beer!

If your team loses before the Super Bowl and is eliminated from the playoffs you lose (obviously). You also lose if your player gets injured in practice at any point, gets busted for drugs and is suspended from play, plays like crap, etc.. Bottom line, there's no excuses, so you're picking a player that you think can not only perform well in the Super Bowl, but make it there.

In picking a player you must promise to send a minimum of 44 oz. of craft beer to the person who ultimately wins. Since there is only one Super Bowl MVP, there is only one winner of this contest. Once the Super Bowl MVP is named (immediately following the game on Feb. 1), I will beermail all participants the shipping address and three favorite styles of the person who had that player. A three week shipping window will then open for you to send your package to the winner. If you aren't going to be in a position where you can ship out beer either financially or geographically in the three weeks after the Super Bow, DON'T JOIN THIS CONTEST! Also, if you're the type of person that will join this now (on December 28th) and completely forget about it when it's time to pay up (on February 1st) DON'T JOIN THIS CONTEST!

As for quality of beer, there is no requirement. I don't expect, nor should anyone else expect, any super rare brews landing on their front step. If someone wants to surprise someone else with something really impressive, that's all cool, but it's certainly not a mandate. Tasty locals is perfectly fine and should be what is expected. That's all I plan on sending (unless someone has a specific request from my distribution area of something they don't have). Last year, 14 different BA's chose players. Though no one won, we were quite close to someone getting 13 kick ass packages of brew. Sounds like fun to me!

As for actually shipping. I don't expect their to be problems, but who knows. I'm not asking for "references" or "trade history" because, truthfully, I have a limited history myself. Though everyone I have ever traded with is likely to give me a quality reference, I don't trade much and haven't in a while. Nevertheless, I have never had issue or created any issues. It would be preferred if you had some trades under you belt, but basically, if you lose and don't ship then you suck at life. Period.

The choosing of players will close as soon as the kick off of the first Wild Card playoff game happens (which is at 4:35 PM EST this coming Saturday, 1/3). After that time, the choosing of players is closed and we move forward with whomever has picked a player. If it's just me and one other bozo, so be it, if it's more, great! Either way, it closes at the kick off of the first Wildcard playoff game.

And again, it's first come, first serve, sorry, it's the only way to do it (organizing a draft of MVP candidates is far too complicated). So if someone chimes in 30 seconds after I post this and takes Payton Manning and you wanted Payton Manning yourself, you're out of luck. Either pick another player or abstain from playing. And remember, please put your choice in this thread so others see that he is off the board. I will confirm in this thread that you have been assigned that player, but I am not on BA constantly, so I may only chime in to update the list once a day. But no worries, posts are time stamped, so whoever names the player first will get them. After that, we can correspond via beermail to get your mailing address and favorite styles. Once the player list is set, I'll start a group beermail with all the participants so we can keep tabs on updates.

Ok, I think that covers everything. I think this will be really fun, I hope you do too.

Aaaaaaand with all of that said.......

I'm taking Russell Wilson off the board! I went with him last year and came close. I'm going with him one more time.

OK, Peyton is my guy, so this really hurts...long shot, but they might just pull one out...Tony Romo.

I live in Dallas and hate the Cowboys, but I almost went with Romo. Problem is if they win, there is just as much of a chance the MVP goes to Murray or Dez as Romo.

You are right there, I too hate Dallas. But, if I can't have Peyton (who WILL be the MVP in a Denver blowout) I might as well hedge my chance and get something out of it if Dallas does actually upset the apple cart. I'd be sick to see them win it, but would feel a little better if I got some beer out of it.

Is there a rating minimum for the 44oz? Not trying to get off cheap or on the other end be an elitist, but it's good to know what we're working with besides just volume.

edit: I do see that you say no rarity requirement or anything, but even given that, it's not uncommon for a minimum BA score of 94, 90, or 85 to be in place; that's what I'm asking about.

Just think of it as a SWTFYW requirement, send good beer, that's it!

I hear where you're coming from, but am going to stick with the no-minimum-rating-requirement. Too many variables to account for with beers that haven't been rated by a lot of users. Something may have a 100 rating and was rated by three homers. So I would have to institute a minimum rating and a minimum times reviewed clause, which I don't feel is necessary. The requirement is to simply send good beer that you think will please the winner.

I wasn't so much suggesting you put one in, as much as asking if there was one implied that I didn't know about. I don't think anyone has ever had a problem with a box I sent out either, so it was more just curiosity.

As far as joining I'll have to look at if I can swing another box in the next month or so, have lots coming up and am supposed to be on "time out"

I was very close to choosing him myself (despite my disdain for all things New England Patriots). Great pick.
