What should be on the shopping list of an Ontarian travelling to Premier Gourmet for the first time?

Soon I'll be making my first trip to Premier Gourmet and I was wondering if anybody has advice on what I should stock up on. I haven't had any beer outside of what has been available at the LCBO over the last 3 years. My budget is between $200-$300 dollars and I don't particularly favour any beer styles. I am looking to grab some of everything. So far I am thinking of grabbing a bottle of Abbaye De Saint Bon-Chien, a four pack of Ten Fidy, and some lagers from Great Lakes and Jack's Abby. I am aware that the website only contains half of their stock, so I am looking for help from people who have recently made the trip. I hope this thread helps others in my shoes.

Some suggestions (or ones I'd pick up from what I can see from their website): Founders Breakfast Stout, Great Divide Yeti, Great Lakes, Ten Fidy (delicious), Maine Brewing Co, Uinta Labyrinth, Jacks Abbey.

There seems to be lots of good stuff, happy hunting!

I'd add Against the Grain, Stone, Evil Twin and Westbrook to Corson's list .There's a good selection on lambic there as well and some special, higher priced bottles behind the counter at the growler fill station. Be careful buying hoppy stuff and be sure to check bottle dates. Sometimes a few bottles linger a little to long there. Growlers of hoppy stuff (check Premier's website for an up to date list) are usually a safe bet.

To add to the list: Brooklyn Chocolate Stout is cheap and delicious with a year or two of age on it. Others I see: Ithaca Flower Power, Long Trail Limbo, Maine, Torpedo, Six-Points Hi-Res, Dirt-Wolf.

    Happy Shopping!

When are you going? I'll be there Friday so I can update you on what's new there when I get back. I'm mostly grabbing stouts and Christmas beers, but I'm hoping they have victory hop ranch and laguintas brwn shugga in when I'm there. Check the twitter feed for what been coming in during the last few weeks. They might still have backwoods bastard as well.

    I agree with everyone's posts.
They are usually pretty good at posting new things on their twitter, so I would watch that.
There is a good selection of lambics and belgians.
I find they also have a good selection of seasonal beers that rotate through pretty well.

Like @boney77 said I would also make sure you check bottle dates!!!!!
Be warned: I have (and it sounds like other too) been burned a few times on dead hoppy brews purchased there.
A personal fav of mine is double jack which they almost always have in stock. However, I have had many occasions where the stock is the same date as the last time a bought it (sometimes 2+mo prior).

Also, always ask if they have anything new or interesting, they sometimes tend to hide cool and limited beers under the counter.

Other than that I would suggest almost anything Maine, Sculpin is typically well rotated and fresh in cans, also they had the westbrook gose last time, and a few prairie beers (birra, standard, brett saison)

    Happy shopping!

I'll probably be going sometime next Monday. I would appreciate it if you could let me know if you see anything interesting that isn't on the website. I heard they have many vintages of J.W. Lees for example, but it isn't posted on the website.

So are you looking for suggestions on beer that is really good that you may not know about (and therefore see it on the shelf but not pick it up) or are you looking for suggestions on what people like that they know is readily available/currently seasonal at Premier?

Only thing I might add is they have an excellent selection of beers from Stone. Also maybe grab yourself a 90-minute IPA or 120-minute IPA from Dogfish Head, both were in stock last week when I was there.

Should still be some Backwoods Bastard there. They recently started getting in some Prairie.

This thread is very timely for me. I am heading to premier tomorrow for the first time. I know I will be overwhelmed with the selection and my budget doesn't support bringing two of everything home.

I just noticed some tweets from them saying they now have ballast point victory at sea, various struise and some dark horse beers. I am really torn as to what to bring back. I have good access to local IPAs (bellwoods, GLB) so I am looking for various stouts and barrel aged stuff. I have very limited experience with lambics, sours and wild ales so perhaps someone could suggest various ones to look for.

Pardon my ignorance but I am just starting out in the wild world of beer and any insights would be appreciated.

Well there's nothing there right now ipa-wise that is leaps and bounds over bellwoods or glb, so you could skip the ipas although I love victory's hop ranch and that just came out today so that's a pretty good and fresh buy. Those de struise beers were like 34 or 44 (I forget which) each so I passed on them, but they look awesome. They have brooklyn black ops and hand and seal on the top shelf and those are both nice barrel aged beers.

Tons of breakfast stout, expedition, Great Lakes blackout stout (a personal favourite), ballast point victory at sea 6 packs. The great thing is you can buy singles of most of the stuff so it's great to make a mix sixer of stuff you havent tried before committing to a 4 or 6 pack.

They have a nice selection of sours but I have no idea what's good there and if it's overpriced or not.

If you bring one beer back, you must make sure it looks like this.

Hi just back from a run there today. They had a couple of Cantillion's. Lots of Evil Twin - Femme Fatal Yuzu, Biscotti... Also just got the Dark Horse Mad Elf and a few others. Tons of Stone - enjoy by etc. All the Sierra Celebration, Bell's Two Hearted. On one of the front shelves they had a 3Fountein Golden Blend. They have the Prairie Ale and Birra. If you decide to cross at Lewiston stop by the Consumers on Niagara Falls BLVD, they have a bunch of BA Narwhal in stock. I also stopped by Viallage beer market in Buffalo and they had Dogfish 120 min and some cool Sours....

Also I can tell you that they, Village, and Consumers do not have any BCBS on the shelves or hidden behind the counters. They were nice enough not to laugh at me when I asked....
