?

Split the bottle/cost or buy it solo?

I was talking with a co-worker this morning, and a certain beer came up, and we both want to try it, but balk at its of price $27/750. Then we mentioned that maybe we'd split the bottle, and, theoretically, the cost. But then I got thinking, either way, I'm still paying the same price per ounce. As a rule of thumb, I won't pay more than $1/oz for a bottle. What do y'all think? Split the bottle and cost, or just bite the bullet on a beer I really want to try?

    Depends on the beer...

How bad do you want to taste it? If you hate it, you're only out $13.50...

I often split with my neighbor - not always on the same exact bottle, but I will get something and he will get something, and between the 2 of us, if one of them bombs we are not the worse, since we are splitting.

This does lead to wifely consternation at our late night driveway beer hand offs...

Been wanting to try it pretty badly for while. But, if I love it, I'm out half a bottle of beer that I love. It's from a well-respected regional brewery, whose beers I love in general. But, almost $30 after tax? :grimacing: Usually I'm so much more decisive.:flushed:

Sounds like you should just buy it... If you trust the brewer and know they make good stuff, it's probably a safe bet. If it's something rare, you better jump on. But if you are totally unsure: Read the review on some website... I forgot the name... Oh yeah: BEERADVOCATE.

So wait, what's the downside to splitting a bottle? On one hand you are spending a lot for a beer alone, and the other you split the cost and share a beer and some time with a good friend... I say split.

I voted to buy it because due to the per ounce price not changing if split the decision is whether to buy it or not. I would typically pass on an expensive beer but maybe I deserve it. Maybe I just went through a busy/shitty week at work and came out whole.

    In summation...

hmmm, sharing a beer I really want with a friend for $13. Where's the downside? People spend $30 on a crappy wine at restaurants, why not less than that for a great beer?

Bite the bullet only if you believe its gonna be great or if it is something that you may not be able to get again !!

If its from a "well-respected regional brewery" can't you go to the brewery & get a taste ?

I wanted to get peoples responses without any potential hype over the beer or brewery clouding folks judgement. It's not super rare, is made on a rotating basis, and from a highly respected brewery. I'll wait a couple days, then mention the beer.

I don't look at ratings or reviews. We've had numerous threads on the topic, and I always say that scores don't matter, mostly because I believe there's a fair bit of grade inflation that happens here.

That's cool that you don't let scores dictate your purchases, but wouldn't you say in this instance it could help you make a more confident purchase?
