?

Split the bottle/cost or buy it solo?

  1. Just buy the damn beer!

This is done in a matter of seconds or is already known, which is how I read the OPs question. More of a matter of execution. Splitting the cost is probably not a good idea, just trade the purchase each time this arises and keep track, lol. I don't know, probably not a viable solution. lol

I voted just buy the beer. I think there is a moment in every Ba's life when they decide the sixpack is a desriable thing and should not be rare. That is when the ideal bomber price will occur to you. Stick to that and you will find you are not missing out . THEN because you have not over shopped, you will find that $27 for one beer does present itself occasionally.

All these things and more. Grabbing a sixer of Field 41 or Mirror Pond is almost a reflex for me. And, I'm always looking for a new beer. But sometimes, a little warning bell goes off, and ya don't know why. This is a beer from a top-notch brewery, who make a bunch of beers that I like, and who makes one of my favorites (Seizoen Bretta). This should have been an automatic grab for me. But, I've been passing on it for months, and I couldn't figure out why. It was partially price, certainly, but something else too. I thought finding out others thought processes would be interesting. The beer will be drank. Or not. Whatever, there's a big, beery world out there.

That warning bell might have been the knowledge that Peche 'N' Brett, which is a much rarer and superior beer from the same brewery, sells for around $25. I would not buy FWV for $27. And depending on how well I knew the staff at the store in question, I'd consider even letting them know that they have this one overpriced. It could just be a mistake.

Oh sure, it's not like I go through a checklist or anything. And there are a lot of far more random variables that subconsciously come into play, whether you are trying to decide to buy a beer or trade stock or execute a multibillion-dollar corporate merger. The entire stock market (upon which much of our economy is based) is essentially a barometer of "how everyone's feeling today," and I bet things like the weather play a much bigger role in completely unrelated decisions than we'd like to believe. At the end of the day, we're all just a bunch of primates sitting around a fire.

Well, we're a hell of a lot closer than NYC or Seattle to two things: low cost of living and tolerable traffic (not that many people here recognize it).

The one and only time I have driven through Spokane in about the last 10 years, I got stuck in a traffic jam. A semi carrying a load of hay bales had spilled half of them all over I-90. Can't disagree about the cost of living. :slight_frown:

My favorite thing involving local semi mishaps (probably not @beertunes' favorite topic) is when a driver gets off I-90 using the wrong exit, winds up downtown, and tries to drive north back to the freeway and, apparently lacking knowledge of his vehicle's height or no depth perception whatsoever, gets stuck while trying to pass under the railroad viaduct that runs through the downtown. It happens every 3-4 years or so, usually requires deflating and/or removing the tires or even partially disassembling the truck, and generally makes using the particular affected street an absolute shitshow for the next couple of days.

Well, getting back to one of the points I made in my previous post, it's a viable solution only if he plans on having future drinking sessions with this coworker of his. If he buys the bottle for them to split this time with the intention of having the coworker pay next time, what might happen is @beertunes will keep coming into work saying to him "We gotta get together again for some more beers" then a week later "When we gonna do some more drinking?" and then a week later the coworker stops working there. As a bartender, I have multiple pairs of regulars come in and switch off who pays every visit, but they're always good friends which might not be the case here.

I was almost that driver a couple times:grimacing::flushed::stuck_out_tongue:! I managed to check myself though.

FWIW, to those of you who followed this saga, here's where we're at. @draheim was kind enough to grab me a couple bottles at sub-$20/bottle. I also talked with the beer buyer at the store where I but most of my "good" beer, and here's why it's more expensive there, than at the Specialty Beer Store, where things are always more expensive: they get the beer from different distributors, so mark-up is probably different. Also, Specialty Beer Store makes regular runs South to grab stuff, and don't have the transportation costs. He also said that this particular beer is the only beer that both stores carry, that is cheaper at SBS. And, he lives in the neighborhood, and stops in regularly for a pint or two.

Thanks everyone for pitching in and making this an enjoyable thread. Cheers!

Moral of story: start a thread about overpriced beer, and you might just end up getting that beer for free.
