Sorry I'm using this app and it kicked me out... I was asking if in other areas it's common that all beer prices are clearly labeled in stores. It drives me crazy that when I go shopping I have to constantly ask what bottles cost. It's not that I'm cheap but it's very relevant information. Is this just a NY thing or is it common practice? Thanks
Everything is supposed to have a price on it. Unfortunately, too many retailers ignore this until the inspector shows up.
I think that's a state matter. In many states, with the rise of the UPC barcode over the past 2-3 decades, the old mandatory price tag laws were repealed and retailers were allowed to only put prices on the shelves, not the individual items. (A law that is routinely ignored - maybe even more than the old price tag rule since the price tags were also necessary for the cashier to ring up the sales.) I haven't seen price tags on most beer at most stores in nearly 20 years in NJ going by the bottles/cases in my cellar.
Definitely a fair number of bottle shops around here that don't have prices marked for individual bottles. Very annoying, so I tend to not frequent those places.
Where in NY are you? In NYC I find that most places have clearly labelled prices. Perhaps not at some bodegas, but most places are pretty good about it.
I think most beer stores I've seen have prices on bottle or shelf. Would certainly be frustrating to now know what they are selling the beer for. I have been to a place which seemingly lets you buy by the bottle if you ask but doesn't really advertize that. I think they would be better off promoting it but not sure if they don't want everyone doing it
Here in TX, the big stores (Total Wine, Spec's) label everything on the shelf. The smaller bottle shop near me tries, but only about 75% of them have actual prices visible.
Most places around here are pretty good (northern California). Even the small liquor stores seem to price the bottles but they do like to price gouge for anything good.
Depends... at Total Wine (VA Hampton Roads area), it appears on a tag beneath the product. AT Grape + Gourmet (VA Beach), they only sell by the bottle (aside from the occasional collections, like Beer Camp), so there's a price sticker on each bottle.
Whole foods has the wrong prices and no prices. Very annoying to have to lug beers up to the cashier to get a price and then go put the beer back. Enjoy
I'm on LI and I shop at beverage barn first(though they don't put prices on almost anything) and then a bunh of other Nassau county shops. Most of them don't. I would absolutely shop more at a place that clearly labels bottles but i haven't seen any close to me. I just hate having to go up to the counter several times to ask how much, especially when it's busy. I generally have an idea but it's still very important.
In Europe the EAN (European Article Number) or Barcode means that prices are on the shelves too. But over here they are very strict on that point. Hell in Northern Ireland if they didn't put labels on shelves we might just assume it was free and just take it... Not a good business strategy
