Last year I brewed the BPA recipe ("The King") from Gordon Strong's book and was very pleased with the results. So, I thought I'd give his ESB recipe a try. Here are some of the recipe details:

Pride of Warwick - Strong Bitter

    89% Maris Otter
    5% Crystal 80L
    3% Flaked maize
    3% Victory
    1% Black Patent

    1 oz. EKG (4.5%) FWH
    .5 oz. Challenger (8.3%) 60
    .5 oz. Fuggles (4.6%) 30
    1 oz. EKG (4.5%) 3 min.
1 oz. Styrian Golding (4%) Whirlpool

    WLP002, OG 1.052, FG 1.016, IBU's 37

    So....

I'm going to modify the hop schedule based on what I have in the freezer. Here's what I've got on hand:

1 oz. Fuggles, 1 oz. EKG, 4 oz. Crystal, little bit of Magnum and Nugget.

I've never brewed with Crystal, but was thinking of using them in place of the Challenger and Styrian. What do you think? Anyone want to suggest an alternative hop schedule?

Crystal is not the same as Challenger and Styrian but will still result in a tasty beer. Styrian Goldings are Fuggle hops grown in the former Yugoslavia.

I wasn't thinking that Crystal was the equivalent of those. I'm really more concerned with how the Crystal might mesh with the Fuggles and EKG's. Alternatively, I might just use the Magnum early and split my EKG's and Fuggles among the late additions.

Just make sure your ibus for early bittering are around the same for your late ibus so the beer is balanced.
