Im trying to save an old (7 months) liquid ale yeast for a cider Im doing. I made a 1 liter starter with cider and pitched the yeast wednesday night. I have not seen any visual signs of fermentation. I know ferm can be quick on starters and ciders dont throw as much krausen. There is a decent sized cake on the bottom. How can I be sure I am good to go? Hydrometer reading?

Yes, gravity reading but you had to do one with that wort´s OG or you´ll have little to no reference. There are FG reference tables for beer, cider and other brews but they count on an ideal OG of the wort. Also since your post is not about beer, I think moderators will delete it.

    Cheers!

Its an ale yeast though so I think theres some relevance. I do have the OG, thanks for the response.

Og 1.058 fg 1.050 ....I'm thinking this yeast is basically dead :/ The color changed and there's some light carbonation though

How did you storage your yeast? They have very short lifetimes if they´re not dried.

7 months is a long time, beyond the expiration time. Probably would have been better to try this as a multistage starter.
