i do this sometimes too, especially if the items involved would be difficult to replace.

Even if they've set bottle limits...sometimes they change, that's why personally, I don't do pretrades. I was planning on going to Huna and the limit was announced to be 3, 1 down from last year and no limit after 7:30. This got changed to 2 bottle limit and case limit at 7:30 so my plan to buy 2 cases went out the window. Then I was gonna skip class Friday so I could leave in the morning with some friends that were road tripping but Wednesday my fluid mechanics professor decided to be an asshole and tell us we had a test Friday so I couldn't skip. I tried to get a last minute flight but they were too expensive so I was SOL. You have no idea how glad I was I didn't do any pre-trades.

I think it's ok to set up pretrades, but (1) don't give your address until you have the bottles, and (2) communicate very clearly to the other person that nothing is guaranteed, i.e. the trade is NOT set in stone.

Notice how I said newer traders...its just some advice. You can disagree all you want. If you are a newer trader though and don't really have a cellar and attend Hunahpu Day/Kate Day/DLD etc, etc. Those will be your first really valuable beers. If you pre-traded most of them and then they change the limit you might be screwed, if any break in transit and you've already agreed to trades for all of them, you will be screwed. When you start out you don't have a cellar full of brewery only releases so if something changes and you already drank the beers that got sent to you, how the hell are you gonna replace them when it was your 1st brewery only beers and you don't have anything of similar value to replace it with. You're gonna be SOL and probably end up on a bad trader thread just because you decided to drink the beers that were sent to you before they got their end.

i generally have 1 trade going on at a time (if that), because i'd feel worse about fucking someone over than being fucked over myself. setting up a pretrade is simply out of the question, beyond "oh, person-i-already-know, you're looking for X? i'm going to the release, i'll grab you a bottle."

edit: re: OP and this thread, outlook not so good...

That's more like it . Previously you had said don't give your address until bottle limits have been set by the brewery...don't give it until you have the bottles is a good rule as well as communicating that there is no guarantee. Pre-trades are fine for some people but personally I don't like them because a lot of BAs looking for pre-trades are pushy as hell and wanna already send you the box and have a guarantee that the trade is set in stone because you already got your bottles. I just don't like dealing with those people because they assume too much and expect you to deliver no matter what so I'd rather steer clear of the pre-trades. Nowadays I don't trade much anyways, I just take care of my trading partners and maybe one or 2 more people and that's it.

I'm fine with pre-trades, but that's mostly because releases around here seem to be significantly more certain than ones elsewhere, for whatever reason.

As for OP, he clearly got screwed, his trading partner needs to be outed and submitted to the list.

He said he would ship something else this weekend (no Huns left he said) and that he's been out of town for 2 weeks... who knows, here's hoping.

Whats he sending to make up for the huna? Are you happy with it? Imo, dont just accept whatever he offers. Its his obligation to make you very happy after this whole ordeal.

lol @ "Out of town" making you dark on the Internet. It isn't 1995 with Compuserve. Anyone with 1 oz of consideration would contact their tradees and let them know whats up. Maybe I am crazy.

I just started trading. I text my partners pictures of their beer. It takes me 10 seconds. Oh, the humanity.

Dude - no - don't settle unless you're truly happy with it. It's his responsibility to either trade for another Huna for you, or find a replacement that you find adequate. DL is a 24,000 bottle release, Huna is sub-5000. If you want a Huna, he owes you a Huna.

He should just return your beer, if he's not willing to find you what he'd promised.

if he can't get you Huna he should get you something more. not a downgrade to DL. He should do 2 DL's or something more.

I've only done one in person trade through this site but...

Dude. Seriously. That's fucked up. Don't settle, but if you're jazzed about the Dark Lord, that's good I guess. I'm amazed you seem to have such a positive outlook still.

Absolutely agree here. I don't open my trade boxes until I know for sure that my partner has received his and that everything has arrived intact. I've never had anything break, but if it ever happens, I'm replacing the bottle that broke, and if for whatever reason, I can't, then if we can't work something out, then the box goes back to him without being opened, and I pay for him to send my end back. Hopefully that never happens, but I think that's the way it should go, if it comes to that.
