I've had the pleasure of drinking numerous bottles of pseudosue and it is definitely one of my favorite beers. The batches released over the past couple months have all had slight variations in appearance and flavor, but the most recent batch seems much different. I remember prior batches being a great golden color and very transparent. The newest ones I've drank have been very murky and opaque. I've read threads on here with info from TG, themselves chiming in, about different lots of hops creating variation, but that doesn't seem like it would account for such a drastic difference in appearance. The taste of the newest batch seems a step down from the remarkably high standard previous batches of this beer have set. While still very enjoyable it just doesn't seem as clean and bright.
Just curious to know if anyone else has noticed this (or am I just being too picky?) and what could be the cause (tweaking the malt bill or a difference in the brewing process maybe?).

Every single bottle of Pseudo I've had over the past three years has been hazy. Personally, all the best hoppy beers I've had were equally murky (other TG ones, Hill Farmstead, Cellarmaker, Treehouse, Alchemist, etc.). Clarity in hoppy beers is overrated. Batch variation is common. Perhaps your bottle is older if it doesn't taste as bright. Their lack of bottle dating makes this possible.

It could actually be different, or you could just be telling yourself it is different. Perception is reality. I've never noticed a difference in the beer personally.

Pseudo's always been clear when I got it, but haze isn't even close to being a concern for me. It has been a couple months the last I had it, but I recall it being as tasty as ever.

I'm not necessarily concerned, more just curious. I've had great ipas or pale ales that are very hazy and others that are very clear.

Drinking a new label Sue right now, more hazy than other recent batches (Zeelander was very hazy as well), taste seems to be right on point.

I drink Sue pretty regularly, and agree there are some variations batch to batch (both flavor and appearance - nose is usually pretty consistent), one factor (totally just my guess) is a new system with higher capacity they went to a few months back, since brewing recipes don't scale linearly, there was probably some tweaks made to use the bigger setup. However, the taste seems to hover between an A to an A+, so I'm not complaining.

IowaPA totally agree with your thoughts. Nose is always spot on and taste is always exceptional but to varying degrees. New brewing setup is probably a reason.

The past 4-5 batches of Sue have been nothing short of brilliant. So damn tasty. I say 4-5 and I mean going back to say, late Summer, until this past one last week's batch. Now, before this period of excellence, to me there were differences in each batch. It was always a good beer but similar to what IowaPA states, for me they ranged from B to A+ (B may seem low and I don't mean it to seem as though I mean I dislike it). For example, last Winter I recall some of the batches having the chivey, green onion flavor to it. I know some of you love this but for me it's not the best PS can taste. Fast forward to this summer and beyond and it's been on the A+ level every time. Also, if I've had one or two bottles linger, up to 2 months I think I've had, it's stayed at a high level.

I'd guess they've in the past gone through different hop distributors/growers so each batch could vary a bit depending on who gave them the Citra hops. Maybe they've settled on one grower and the amazing flavor has been consistent. That and the new brewing system the have up there has been perfected!

Psuedosue has always beer a hazy hoppy beer. That's the way it was when I first started drinking Psue and that's how I have always remembered it to be. Within the last two or three months I have noticed that the haziness is less common and there is more clarity noted in the body of the beer. I personally have noticed that when Psue lacks the haziness in appearance that the beer is more bitter, the hops taste less juicy, and I get a spearmint and mentol flavor. I would prefer more bottles of hazy Psuedosue! I opened a bottle of the most recent batch with a cicerone and he said exactly what I thought. He also added some incite that he has noticed that citra hops occasionally have this characteristic, but only in single hop beers. `

I agree that the past few batches have seemed to have more variations than I have encountered in the past. We were there a couple times in the past month and had two different batches. Both had the same nose but the flavor just wasn't consistent or like what it used to be. It was really missing that strong tropical/mango flavor that I typically get from it. Not saying it was bad by any means but it was just different. We had some friends that felt the same way after sharing a bottle with them. Glad to hear others have noticed the same thing and it wasn't just us.

I think there are definite batch variations, though pretty minor. I did get one batch a few months ago that seemed to be less juicy and had more of a slight alcohol note at the end. Other than that, most of the variation I see does tend to be in the appearance, not so much in the flavor/aroma.

The only variation I ever pick up is hazy vs. clear. I'll be drinking a lot of it tonight, and will keep my eye on things.

I just had a discussion on this subject the other day with another BA. I got a bottle from IA just before Thanksgiving. Slightly hazy appearance with the tropical fruit/lemon zest flavor (that I usually get from PS). Got another bottle from La Crosse around Christmas and it was cloudy as all get-out and had a more ripe melon/green onion flavor. Both bottles were "fresh" per the store proprietor so I'm assuming they were different batches. Both were top notch in terms of quality and very enjoyable but almost two different beers altogether.

Mine last night was quite hazy, and quite delicious as usual. Turned my sister and her man onto it from Denver who never want hop forward beers and they loved it.
I will revisit again as a service to the community and report back. BTW- this was the batch released the week of the IGN and Twisted releases.
