Definitely would love to try out some of those others mentioned while I'm down there. Just for the record as well I didn't expect to just breeze through and get PTE haha. When I went to VT for lawsons I looked into where to go and at what time I needed to be there to make sure I got some. Thought maybe it could be the same type if situation in philly that's why I thought it best ask people from the area on here. Thanks for the suggestions

i saw several cases of damnation at bella vista a few weeks back and i know you can find sours (except beat) down town. Teresas is a guarantee for bottled sours (also for take out) and prices arent horrible considering they ALWAYS have them. picking up cases of sours however require a waiting list. you're easiest bet is to fly out to the damn brewpub!

Because the Philly beer scene is light years ahead of ny, boston, and dc, combined.

That and if Philly did get bottles of PtE, certain d-bags would treat it as a "commodity" and buy it all up for "trade bait".

More obvious? Philly is a far better craft beer town than any of those you mentioned, with a far better and more developed beer scene. It's also the second largest metropolitan area in the NE corridor after NYC, so I'm not sure why marketing would target DC or Boston first.

Michael Jackson also would rather be in Philly. Craft beer was in here far before it caught on most other places. Philly was also the leading pioneer in importing Belgian beer to the U.S. A lot of brewers of Belgian inspiration, including the crew at RR, owe a lot of their success to the folks in Philly who were daring enough to try and sell Belgian beer to Americans. The passion here for beer is unmatched anywhere in the country, and has been for probably longer than most people even realize.

Prior to coming down here you may want to throw out an IP trade request out there for PtE. I'm sure there are some Philly folk who have some extras they've received in trade and travels (Sadly not myself). If you're coming from Maine I'm sure you have access to some New England stuff we can't get down here.

“Just thought I could bring some back for my buddies but apparently not!” Maybe one of the bars would be willing to sell you a growler that you can bring home with you?

    Cheers!

P.S. As others have posted there are lots of great breweries and brewpubs in SEPA. You might enjoy a visit to Tired Hands, Forest & Main, Barren Hill, Iron Hill (multiple locations), etc.

That's a good idea for some reason I hadn't even thought that...pretty much nailed down end of august so it's a while off but I'm excited to check out the beer scene in Philly for sure.

Good thought, but I don't know of any bar that has PtE in the past that would fill growlers, let alone filling PtE growlers. PtE is pretty coveted by bars that are lucky enough to get some so I'd have a hard time believing they would even consider filling PtE growlers even if they filled other growlers.

Doesn't hurt to ask. The worst case is they say no.

I would suggest that Brutus627 approach the bar with a forlorn look and explain that he is from Maine and is looking to bring some beer back to his sick father (or something like that). Hopefully that will 'work'?

    Cheers!

Yep. Over the years, I've encountered a couple of places that would fill growlers of PtE in SEPA, but it was only because they knew me, felt I was a good customer, and I ordered the beer in advance (and made arrangements to get there right after it went on tap). My guess is that there are places that would do the same for other long time customers as well, but it's unlikely that any place would be willing to fill a growler for a one time customer, coming from out of town (though as Jack mentioned, it never hurts to ask).

If memory servies, I think Hawthornes might have sold growlers of PtE as well, right when they first opened. However, I think that was a one time, special occasion, as I've never seen it on tap there since (or at least available for growler fill). Anyway...

I live and work within an hour of the brewery and you essentially need to know the delivery schedules or have a friend who works at the store to get any bottles of PtE here. The few places where it does even reach the shelf, it's gone within two hours. I thought I would be swimming in it when I moved to SF and while it is easy to find on draft here, they may as well not even distribute the bottles any more. The number one thread in the Pacific forum is "traveling to x California city, where can I find some Pliny bottles" and the answer is that the only place you're usually guaranteed to find it in bottles is at the brewery.
